TexasPilothouse Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 So bottom line is I had the front brake drum turned and it still doesn't fit over the new brake pads? Any help is appreciated! Didn't know if this would make a difference but does a 49 B-1-B and a 52 B-3 have the same size of brake drums and pads? Both are 1/2 tons. Thanks Quote
B1B Keven Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Are all of the adjustments for the shoes all the way in? Did you crack the bleeder valve and try to push the shoes further in? Quote
Young Ed Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Did you get new wheel cylinders and if so are you using new or old pushpins? Been reports of mismatch between piston depth and pin length. Quote

JIPJOBXX Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 I know this sounds redounded but did you try to clamp the two shoes with a large clamp? I know I use a tool I use for woodworking and it compressed the shoes with the force of the clamp. Quote

JIPJOBXX Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 I wonder if you have the right brake cyclinder? And here is a picture of what I used at one time as I remember???http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=5334&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=pla&utm_campaign=PLA&gclid=CI6lyNij4rYCFct7QgodyxgAaQ Quote
TexasPilothouse Posted April 24, 2013 Author Report Posted April 24, 2013 I'll try that before I go about ordering new brake cylinders again! Quote
lugnut123 Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 (edited) Are your lower brake hinge point adgustable. I think some work like a cam. they adjust in and out. ???? Are the hinge pins in backwards??I think the nuts go to the inside. Can you put your new and old brake shoes side by side and see if there is a difference. Twist a coat hanger around your spindle and run it out to the shoes. ( poor boy brake caliper)Check if your brake shoes are in a circle. ( checck for roundness) Edited April 24, 2013 by lugnut123 Quote
Mark Haymond Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 If you still have the old shoes, compare the thickness of the new friction lining with the old linings. The photos suggest your fit is close,,,, but just a tiny bit too large. Quote
P15-D24 Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 You can putz around for hours trying to figure out what is wrong or just pull off a single shoe and see if it fits the inside circumference of the brake drum. If is does then you have an issue with either adjusters not fully retracted or wrong wheel cylinder pins. If it doesn't fit then then you have the wrong size shoes. Find a real brake shop and they can grind them to fit the drum or return for the correct sized shoe. 1 Quote
lugnut123 Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Check the part of your brake shoe that fits inside the wheel cylinder and see if they go all the way inside the cylinder.. Check and seee if they are hitting one side or the other Maybe they are to fat to go all the way in. Quote
TexasPilothouse Posted April 24, 2013 Author Report Posted April 24, 2013 I will try all of that and let you guys know how it comes out! Thanks for all the help! Quote
B1B Keven Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 Landon, There are two different length 'close pins' (the piece between the shoe and the wheel cylinder. Maybe you ended up with the long ones? Quote
HanksB3B Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 ^^^That's really good to know^^^ Thanks! "Hang on to your old wheel cylinders", Hank Quote
