I want to register my 52 plymouth. The title has the ID number same as the frame rear section on the right side behind the rear wheel.  Motor number is different than that number. There is a number on the drivers door post says vehicle number. What number is that for?  I bought the car 25 years ago. It came with a pink slip, but it is not signed or dated. I did a search for him, but found nothing. I have no idea where the titled original owner can be reached, or if he is even alive.   Any thoughts Stan

Every state seems to be different and even counties or regions within states used different numbers back then.  The number on the frame should be the same as the original engine number.  the umber on the door post is the serial number Chrysler assigned to a complete car in sequential number as they were manufactured.  Your best answer would probably be on your Dept of Motor Vehicle or Tax office website.

If i'm correct you are in central CA. Just need to take the paper work you have to the DMV and get handed a stack of forms to be filled out. Non-op  form to be filled out that the car was never driven on streets etc., brake, light inspection from a licensed?? (not sure Ca.  light/ safety licenses and still used) . Just a pile of paper work and an DMV or Ca. Highway Patrol confirmation of the Frame #. Clean and mark out well the location!

OR, find and independant DMV licensed inspector to verify #'s and paper work, They can be of great help with older car registrations, but they do change for their services, last time i checked it was $50 minimum if you bring car to them!  Best part of their services- not standing in line at the dmv for the 1-2 hr. wait, multiple times!!

If you cannot locate an independent DMV verifier, i'm sure someone on this forum has used them of i can call one in Sacto. Ca. area and ask how to locate one in your area.

Best to ya,

I don't think there is a standard number to register the car in California; mine is registered with the body number, so I had no problem when I swapped in the Dodge flathead!

I think their standard is anything that is on old paperwork as long as it is not a duplicate of something already in the computer. A body number might serve that purpose.

Not sure it is possible nowadays, but my car was originally registered in NY using the engine number. When I moved to Maryland I asked if they could register it with the serial number. And they did with essentially no hassle and no inspection of the car.

When I moved California they accepted the serial number but did have an inspector check the car for the proper numbers.

My 50 4dr. is also registered with the screwed on body #  plate under the firewall , even though it does have a door ID plate. Why, don't know but it had already been rego'ed that way per the title and i sure didn't want to open a can of worms!

PO did  NOT file a Non-op on it and i cost me almost $400 more!

Stan may get lucky and get off easy as the car should  Not be on the books anywhere per his post and may be able to skip much of the BS. Hopefully so!  I guess my post represents some of the worst possible ploblems at the Ca. DMV.

Glad some of you do not have to deal with the CA. DMV!!!   ;)

IT CAN BE STUPID TO THE MAX!

Good luck Stan,

Best to ya,

Doug
