pflaming Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 In the late '90's or early 20's a major bridge collapses in the great lakes area. The govenment said it would take some 18 months to replace it but the locals replaced it in a month or two at a fraction of the government estimate. ]' Does anyone know the story. I need that to help a HS student with a contest speech. Thank you. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 Paul are you talking about the 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis? Some of your other details are off but thats the only one I can think of that comes close. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 Just curious, did you or better yet the student google bridge failures? I just did and found a bunch of information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-35W_Mississippi_River_bridge Quote
RobertKB Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 (edited) Don, interesting read and thanks for posting that. Interesting to note that the bridge had been deemed "structurally deficient" several times yet nothing was really done to strengthen it. I don't believe enough is being done in the US or Canada to deal with degrading infrastructure. Google can be your friend for those looking for information. Edited February 24, 2013 by RobertKB Quote
Young Ed Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 The one part that really gets me going is the fact that the successor of the company that built it 40 years prior is being sued. Crazy. Quote
MacGyver Posted February 25, 2013 Report Posted February 25, 2013 We had a bridge failure in Milwaukee back in 2000. Not by any means as catastrophic as what went on with the I-35 bridge, but a failure just the same; Could be useful for the student's research.
