Powerhouse Posted February 19, 2013 Author Report Posted February 19, 2013 Mine didn't have a screen...but eventually after rebuild I added one of the VPW crankcase valves routed to the intake...so that's no longer open. I guess it got in there. I don't think it would have been a good enough flyer to get past the pistons and valves if it got sucked in the intake. hahaha. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 It will take another couple of million years of evolution before they can fly like that. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 Bees and wasps can enter the block through the road draft tube, I thought there was a screen in the draft tube. Early cars its just a tube with a 90degree bend and a bolt hole. The later cars have a multi part deal with a filter. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 Early cars its just a tube with a 90degree bend and a bolt hole. The later cars have a multi part deal with a filter. What is early and what is late in years? Quote
TodFitch Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 What is early and what is late in years? Don't know about late, but my '33 has just a tube with a 90° bend and a bolt hole. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 What is early and what is late in years? I'm not sure of an exact cutoff. I believe Dads 39 had the plain tube and my truck is supposed to have one(it was wrecked so it got upgraded). However my p15 has the filter style. Quote
Powerhouse Posted February 19, 2013 Author Report Posted February 19, 2013 My 47 engine had the bent tube...no filter. My 39 had a straight tube...no filter. Quote
Powerhouse Posted May 24, 2013 Author Report Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) Howdy all. Been busy with other things, as if there were other things hahaha. But the stupid old clack noise is still there. My mpg have gone up though...quite a bit too...from around 13mpg to 25ish. I couldn't believe it myself..but I checked a second time and it's still around 25. I might have a had a vacuum leak at the carb too that I fixed.....but probably not a huge one. I don't do freeway anymore since My tires need replacing and give a heck of a wobble up front over 50 from being worn down. Still have to replace on more king pin and then adjust everything. Anyway, The noise seems to come from the rear of the block...maybe crank is messed up? After all the crap I replaced I just can't believe the noise hasn't changed one bit. I just don't know. I am about calling it quits with this mill. Just can't afford any more work and no time anyway to mess with things. I'll just have to run her as is untill it gives up the ghost. Really disappointed after all the money, blood, sweat and tears. Maybe a 230 will find it's way into my garage someday along with some cash to build it. I am wondering if something in the clutch area is causing the clack...but it sounds like engine noise the more I poke around. I ordered a new high volume oil pump from MOPARFORUM on ebay. Mine is a bit worse for wear. I took it out to check some things and noticed it may need to be rebuilt....so I just bought the high volume version. Maybe some more oil is needed and will hep stop the clacking. And then I woke up. Edited May 24, 2013 by Powerhouse Quote
pflaming Posted May 24, 2013 Report Posted May 24, 2013 When I replaced the pistons and rings, my machinist suggested I balance the rods and pistons. I commented that I thought only racing engines did that. His reply was that that was true, but if the pistons are balanced with their respective rods and ris pins, then the rythmn of the pistons will be smooth and that will extend the life of everything by many times. So I had mine balance. My engine runs very smoothly. I wish you well in your search. Paul Quote
Powerhouse Posted May 31, 2013 Author Report Posted May 31, 2013 Thanks much. I actually took the time to balance them as well. I think the book calls for something like within 7 grams of each other..but I was able to get them to be all pretty much the same. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted June 1, 2013 Report Posted June 1, 2013 Have you checked the flywheel mounting bolts for proper torque? A little wobble in that area could give the symptoms you have. Quote
Powerhouse Posted June 1, 2013 Author Report Posted June 1, 2013 Thanks. yes. I replaced the ring gear and had it surfaced too just to make sure it was good. Quote
