55 Fargo Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 Does anyone know if there is supposed to be an access panel to get at a 1955-56 Dodge/Fargo pickup trucks. I do not see anything in the cab in the area directly over the sender unit area. There is removable panels to get at filler neck hose. I have to remove the sender, and was hoping i would not have to drop the gas tank, but looks like I do. I was thinking perhaps I had an oddball, where they forgot to make this panel at factory, unless the removable floor panel will allow access close to the sender head....thanx Quote
52b3b Joe Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 On the Pilothouse's theres a steel round plug in the floor that snaps in over the sending unit. No idea if they're like that on yours. Quote

55dodgec3 Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 On the 55/56's, to get to the sending unit, your gonna have to drop the tank. Quote

William Davey Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 The fuel tank sender is not accessible without dropping the tank. Fortunately, there's a drain plug in the bottom so at least you can empty the tank before dropping. I also had to cut the fuel line on mine, but it looked like a PO cob job so maybe you can find a hose to remove. The job sounds worse than it really is. Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 19, 2013 Author Report Posted January 19, 2013 I have had this tank drained before, do not see that big of a deal to drop her, I have another spare tank too. I am in the process of building a custom sender unit, from the old, combined with a new universal type. I will post pics as things progress.... Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 21, 2013 Author Report Posted January 21, 2013 Hey all, i have a old sender taken apart, and ready to transplant top mounting disc to new 78-10 ohm range universal fit sender unit. Up here only types I can buy are 33-240 ohm range universal senders, cannot make this work, unless I use there gauge. Any place i can buy a 78-10 ohm range universal sender unit, aside from JC Whitney, which has risen in price from $20, to like $45. My other choice is to buy a Roberts re-pop at $85, not sure how great they are either.....thanx Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 21, 2013 Author Report Posted January 21, 2013 Found this at Tanksinc, for $35, plus postage, looks not bad, and is the correct 78-10 ohm rating... http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=276/category_id=62/home_id=-1/mode=prod/prd276.htm Quote
navyboy Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 I need yo bump this as I have a question, I also need a new sender. My understanding is I need a 10to 78 ohm sender. I went to the site from the above link but the range doesn't go to 78 or does the other one work? Help lol. Quote
navyboy Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 Site says they have a 10 to 73 ohm for early mopar from the above link, does that work? Quote
mojoe_24 Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 So my gas gauge doesn't work. I imagine that means I need a new gauge and sender? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 So my gas gauge doesn't work. I imagine that means I need a new gauge and sender? It could also mean that the wire to your sender is bad, or you have a poor ground for the sender. Some further troubleshooting is required. Quote
navyboy Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Any word on fuel sender from the link above. My understanding is we need 10_78 but the link is for 10_73 will the 10_73 sender work within our range? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I'm sure it would work fine. It may be slightly off at the empty end, but not enough to make a big difference. Quote
