38plymouth Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 Have any of you ever shipped your car across country? We just put our house in NY up for sale and plan to move to Florida soon. I'm trying to work out the logistics of getting all my stuff to Florida and I'm starting to think that it might be best to hire a company to trailer my plymouth for me. I would prefer to do it myself but that might not work out. I'm real nervous about having someone else do it. I did a little searching for companies and prices but I'm just not comfortable with anybody yet. I'd love a recommendation if anyone has done it before. Quote

They have the experience and also have a vested interest in deliverying a car without any damage. They are very professional. I knew the gentleman that started Horesless Carraige. I called several of the bigger named shippers. They all quoted about the same price, about $900 to go from MA to NC. At the time I had some specific scheduling needs. I can only picture one of those huge car haulers flying down I95 with my car hanging off the back. Scares the hell out of me. I will check out Mr. Sunday. Quote

T120 Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 On a couple of occasions where I had long distance moves,I've had a full size vehicle loaded into the same van as our household effects,never had a problem.Depending on the vehicle when loading or off loading and where the angle of the loading ramp may be a little too steep and where clearance is an issue,I've hired a local towing outfit with a tilt deck to load,off load from the van. adam_knox Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 Just be careful with the "broker" transporters. What I did what hire a company and said I would pay X amount of dollars. Then truckers would accept the bid based on the price I was offering and the route. Unfortunately when I had my car shipped it was right when the gas prices shot up and where the car was located was not on a major trucking route. Waited about a month for the car. Make sure you inspect your car very well. I did not see the car in person before I bought it and there were damages I failed to see (the front grill chrome was dented and gouged... still looking for one more replacement bar). Plus my top ripped off and snapped the top bow pivot bolt. Still don't know if it will align properly. In anycase, I had already signed the form. It will cost me more to repair the car than it did to ship it from CA to WI. I vote road trip it! At least if it gets damaged you get to enjoy the memory of the trip. Quote

I used Exotic Transporters to move my Dodge from Sioux City IA to Sebring Fl about 4 years ago. http://www.exoticcartransport.com/ They were recommended to me by friends in a Corvette Club. My thinking was if the transporter can keep a "Vette owner happy, they'll do a fine job for me. Outstanding service from pick up thru delivery. The same driver team handled the entire process. I think he does good work as he carries some high dollar vehicles on occasion. I don't know if he makes a special run like to your location empty or if he waits for something going to your area and then combines. Another young man in our area, Ben D over on the HAMB, receives very high marks from customers. I think he uses an open trailer. Plus, there are others. The big boys like Passport Transport and others are accustomed to toting valuable vehicles all over the country. Quote

I really can't get everything down without making 2 trips so I decided to bring my boat down this Sunday and I'm towing my plymouth with the uhaul truck in January. I'm looking forward to being able to drive the car year round in Florida. NY winters suck:mad: I might need to figure out a way to add AC in the future though. Quote

Good luck. We are renting a house in Cocoa until we buy our own. We plan on staying somewhere in that area because we have relatives there. I was looking forward to not paying state taxes but it looks like our car insurance is going to triple! There goes the tax savings. Quote
greg g Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 Apparently hardly anyone in Fla has insurance. My daughter was involved in two accidents when she lived there, neither was covered. She had to go to court with one, and her isurance coverd the other because they wrote it up as a Parking lot drive off accident. Quote
