Alexander Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 Hi Gents what are some of your experiences with replacing the front & rear mat with new carpet? Who are some of the vendors that sell a good fitting mat? I would like to replace it in my 51 dodge coronet convert. I think it should be the same fit for 49-52 Plymouth. thanks Alex Quote
JerseyHarold Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 Dodges have bigger bodies than Plymouths so the flooring is different. I'd try Bill Hirsch. He has been in business for a long time and has a good reputation. Quote
suntennis Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 Most any good auto upholstry shop should be able to copy what you have or make from scratch new carpets. SMS Auto Fabrics at smsautofabrics.com should be able to make the carpets for you with original type or custom fabric. This company is in Oregon with a phone number of 503-263-3535. They are on the spendy side. Their business is fabrics for older cars. I got a headliner from them and was happy with the product. Quote
Alexander Posted September 1, 2012 Author Report Posted September 1, 2012 Thanks guys, Anyone else? I see JC whiteny has them too. Anyone have experiance with them? Thanks Alex Quote
Alexander Posted September 1, 2012 Author Report Posted September 1, 2012 Also seeing Kantor sells a set for the 49-52 coronet. Any experience with them? Quote
Young Ed Posted September 1, 2012 Report Posted September 1, 2012 Thanks guys, Anyone else? I see JC whiteny has them too. Anyone have experiance with them? Thanks Alex My JCwhitney custom fit carpet basically meant they sent me something that was sorta kinda close and I spent all day custom fitting it myself. And after all that it still doesn't fit all that well in the front. Quote

B1B Keven Posted September 1, 2012 Report Posted September 1, 2012 Maybe? http://www.ebay.com/itm/DODGE-1936-1952-CARPET-NEW-IN-BOX-READY-TO-INSTALL-/310374070571?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4843bc792b&vxp=mtr Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 1, 2012 Report Posted September 1, 2012 that appears to be just a flat cut carpet with a heel pad sewn on..not sure you will like this and beside..what are you to do when inpecting brake fluid level..yep..you right..pull the entire thing up..carpet like this should be a three peice front section with snap in footwell similar to English cars...well that is my take on it anyway...I have found the English approach very easy to fit contours and have a nice floor.. easy to remove and clean and in the case of our cars..service the master cylinder... Quote
Furylee2 Posted September 1, 2012 Report Posted September 1, 2012 Actually Tim, when I first got the car, I tried to use the access through the floor to add fluid. Seems the master cylinder isn't directly below, I find it easier to add fluid from under the hood. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 1, 2012 Report Posted September 1, 2012 I can see where on your older car that may well be the case but as the 49-52 as the man is asking about..not going to be easy service..on that note is why I put a remote reservoir on my 54 Plymouth.. I do think on my car I will have the snap in front floor panels.. Quote
Alexander Posted September 2, 2012 Author Report Posted September 2, 2012 Great feedback thanks! Seems JC Whitney is mediocre with regards to fit? If anyone has pictures accompanied with the vendor used, that would be great. I tried the local upholstery shop, but they want too much ($450). I welcome more feedback. Thanks for the ebay link, but I am not sure how well it would work as it has no accommodations for the hump. Thanks, Alex Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 if you looking for a custom fit one piece with a molded carpet look..either do it yourself or pay the 450.00....or solicit yet another upholestry shop..it is not going to be cheap for a nice fit and high quality loop pile.. Alexander Posted September 2, 2012 Author Report Posted September 2, 2012 Tim, Thanks for your suggestion, but my question is for "feeback" with regards to peoples experiance with the variose vendors who sell carpet kits. Alex Quote
michael.warshaw Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 You can get a decent rug from bill hirsh auto. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 2, 2012 Report Posted September 2, 2012 most folks pay less for their car than some ask for a carpet...lol Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 I bought carpet material plus a heel pad from an automotive upholstry supply place. You also need to get some material to be used for piping around the edges. Also got some felt stuff for insulation under the carpet. Then, I took the carpet to a local trim shop who agreed to install it. For cutting, fitting and binding carpet both in the car, and in the bottom of the trunk as well, he charged me $250. He made a split in the carpet next to the center hump so it can be folded back to check the brake fluid level, add fluid, etc. Here's a picture of that feature...... Quote
Alexander Posted September 3, 2012 Author Report Posted September 3, 2012 Looks good Bob. Perhaps this is the way I will do mine if I dont buy one off the shelf. ALex Quote
