these engines rely on good belt contact to ensure the cooling fan is working and the air must flow over the cylinders so that means the shields must be in place to control and direct the flow of air...also ensure that the oil level is up as a lot of cooling is provided here also..also be sure the vents from the outside to the engine compartment are not plugged with debris like leaves etc

I have a 65 monza 4-door and had a 65 corsa coupe and a 64 monza coupe. Tim has it spot on. As he said, the shrouds are VERY important and they all need to be in place. Next, you need to look at the exhaust louvers for the exhaust heat. These are two flap doors at the rear grill on the lower shrouds. These should fully open when the engine is warmed up. These are the thermostat for the engine and if the dont open, you'll over heat. There is a thermostat for each door. Next check to make sure no mice made their home in that lower shroud while your looking down there. Make sure the belt is tight too. The smoke from the carbs and pump is the gas vaporizing due to the high heat. I know Corvairs pretty well, feel free to PM me with questions and I'll try to help.

What year is it?

Everytime I hear about a Corvair, I can't help but relive my teen years in Detroit. I had a very clapped-out 1950 Plymouth I drag raced at Detroit Dragway in the 60s. I raced in N stock, the lowest class, as did some Corvairs. I used to routinely beat them (Falcons too) which they must have hated...it always made my day!

There is a pair of doors or block off plates that cover the opening the upper portion of the air ducts in the rear of the engine compartment that are removed in the winter to allow the heated air to return to the engine compartment until the thermostat opens the outside doors at the end of the air ducts. these openings must be closed in the summer or the engine compartment can become too hot.

They don't cause an overheating issue like the one he is having, but I agree they can help cause it to run slightly warmer. There is only one on the drivers side near the oil cooler. They are opened in cold weather for de-icing and warming up the carbs. I know the 65-69s have the removable cover and I think the 60-64s don't have a cover and are always open.

Good vendor and they are great to work with. I bought new ones for my 65 corsa coupe.

If those were not working, then I bet that was the main problem!

When you put the new ones in, you need to make sure when the doors open up all the way that the doors are completely horizontal. It doesn't matter where they end up when the engine is cold, but they need to be perfectly horizontal when fully open and warmed up. The ends are on a threaded rod to adjust.
