tom'sB2B Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 I have a 3-speed fluid drive that crapped-out. I'm thinking about swapping it out. P15-D24 says that you can change the input shaft on a standard three speed to make it adaptable to fluid drive. Could I do that with a standard four speed as well? I wouldn't mind going from a column to a floor shifter if need be. Quote
55 Fargo Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 If the 4 speed housing will bolt up to the fluid drive clutch housing, are they the same? Will the 3 speed trans input shaft, fit into the 4 speed trans ? This sounds interesting, or how about a T5 trans fluid drive, could that be possible, using a 3 speed stock trans input shaft, adapted or made to fit the T5 trans..... Quote
Guest P15-D24 Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 Never seen one listed in the parts book and never heard of one. Quote
Guest P15-D24 Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 They are pretty straightforward and usually only need syncros and a small parts kit. Bearings are usually ok. Quote
HanksB3B Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 This seems to ring a Bellhousing, but I'm not sure... Hank Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 Some where I have a fluid drive 4 speed out of a 1 ton I parted out years ago. You could get a spur gear or a syncro 4 speed FD trans option back in the day on the Dodge trucks. Seen a few over the years. Ohhh plus the Truck-O-Matic M-6 option! Bob Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 of interest but in the Bunn and Bromwell book I have on Dodge Trucks..it stated the fluid drive was mid year intorduction in the '49 model and first used on the route vans, April 1950 and a note further states that it was available in either three or four speed transmissions.. Merle Coggins Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I've got a spur gear 4 speed in my truck with Fluid Drive. I also have a syncro 4 speed for standard clutch. I've talked with one of our well known transmission shops here in town to see if they could get a FD input shaft for the syncro trans. No dice... They checked around their sources and couldn't find anything. So to answer your question, I don't think it'll be possible. If you want floor shift maybe you can find floor shift 3 speed that will accept your FD input shaft. Merle Quote
tom'sB2B Posted July 16, 2012 Author Report Posted July 16, 2012 Disassembled my 3-speed transmission. One of the pins on the syncro assembly broke off and I have a few chewed up teeth on my cluster gear. I guessing that's what was causing all the noise in first gear. Everything else looks pretty good. 1st gear (low-reverse) is a little pitted, but doesn't look to bad. I'm wondering how much wear on these gears are acceptable...these gears are hard to find and expensive to replace. I would like to re-use as much as possible. Sorry the pictures kind of suck. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 16, 2012 Report Posted July 16, 2012 I think your cluster gear is ready to go to China to come back as a Kia connecting rod! Bob Quote
