Young Ed Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 When I first got my P15 I thought it was cool to have the pretty unique dual heater setup. I'm not liking them so much anymore! I've never been able to open the cowl vent on my car. So last night I started trying to unbury it. What a pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So far I've got the pass heater completely removed along with the fresh air plenum from the top of it. Thought I had enough removed to slide that thing down and out but I guess not. Looks like tonight I will have to remove the drivers heater core too. Dang it. Oh and while I had my head under the dash the light fell on my and I have a nice burn on my upper arm! So now that I've vented any advice about these dual heater/fresh air heaters is welcome. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Ed..can't help you with the heater but can advise you on the use of a floursent lamp..I use the 25 watt screw base model that is about 8.00 pack of three at Wal-rippers..I have dropped mine a couple times and was amazed it still works, I have never had this much luck with regular or long life or safety reinforeced bulbs before..always cool to the touch might I add..being buried under the dash doing my wiring install this light has been just the ticket. On the fresh air duct...my AC unit is installed dead center of the dash and just below the cowl vent. I was able to modify the brackets and brace to the overhead area where there is a support bracked bolt installed by factory..my vent is totally operational and the lever is offset right to allow for operation with the added center floor console for the stero and other accessories. Young Ed Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 Might be a good idea. My arm has a gridwork burnt into it from the cage on the light! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 as Monk says, you'll thank me later... Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Ed, Do you have the P15 parts book? There is a page that shows how it goes together in there. Might help you in removing it. If you don't have it, let me know. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 I had a scan of that with me in the car from dads parts book. So far it hasn't been too helpful. It will probably be more handy later when I've forgotten how this giant mess goes back together! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 I bought one of those tube style flourescent lights. Stays cooler than one with the regular bulb, but sometimes it's not the very best amount of light output. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Would be much easier with the dash out. Not much room under that dash to work, much less see what you are doing under there. Good luck. Hope the PO didn't weld the thing shut. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 Bob thats what I have at my own house for light. I was at Dads. Basically the deal was after I stood on my head helping R&R the 8track player in his 75 olds vert that he was going to help with my cowl vent. He took the radio apart and found a spring had fallen off. Stretched it out a little and put it back and so far it works. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 I have pried it open a tiny bit so I don't think its welded. Just stuck with rust from sitting in the junkyard. The coupe came out of a yard in wyoming. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Boy working under any dash is a pain in the old rear. I had to replace my heater core on my 60 T bird and also the windshild wipper motor. Now you think these old Dodges are hard to get at you should try my T Bird. That car is so low to the ground that even my new Honda sits higher. Dash work is no fun at all especially when your over the hill:D !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote

I think that is what makes the 57 - 60 Fords so neat looking. They all seem to sit low to the ground without lowering. I had a 57 Ford years ago that sat that way and it was not lowered. Really sharp looking. I'll have to confiscate the only picture I know of it from my mother this year when I visit her. Only reason I haven't taken it sooner was because my first wife is in the picture:eek: Maybe I can give her a mustache and beard in photoshop to improve the picture a little. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 I've been using one of those fluorescent bulbs in my drop light for a year. Not only are they great because they are cool and don't have to be replaced every time you drop them (I never did understand why they call them drop lights if you have to replace the bulb every time you drop it) but they also give you better light because they don't cast the harsh shadows that the incandescent bulbs do. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 I use to go through a lot of light bulbs in my drop light because I'd drop it. Then I finally got with it and paid several bucks to buy a rugged light bulb for it. I've dropped it and kicked it I don't know how many times since then (about 8 years or more) and that bulb is still good. It does produce the heat though, so you do have to watch where you touch the guard or lay it down when using it. Personally I think these bulbs are brighter than the fluorescent are. Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 Ed, I am like you I have the duals, there out of the car right now, but I am only going to use one the right side, not sure if I am going to put in the fersh air intake either, my car will not be winter driven..Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted May 2, 2007 Author Report Posted May 2, 2007 Update. Finally got both the heaters out and the fresh air setup. What a PITA! I'm tempted not to reinstall the fresh air intake either. The door that lets fresh air into the cabin is kinda broken and I'm still not sure why my cowl vent wouldn't open. It opens freely now that all the fresh air stuff is removed. So something else was broken not hooked up properly etc Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Ed, my car does not have the fresh air venting system.....just the cowl vent and the heater with defrosters. Seems good enough to me. If you want two heaters.......just use the two heaters and call it good. Quote

You just lower the top and you've got way more than we do with ours. Although, it's not recommended you lower the top while it's raining out. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 True, Norm. Nor is it recommended to lower the top while driving along. One time, a few years ago, the top was not latched in the closed position (I thought it was), and the wind popped it about halfway open in an instant. Fortunately, I wasn't going very fast....and it didn't damage anything. I just gotta remember to turn that T handle in the center. Quote
