FlyingDutchman Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Hi Gang! I want to put a new tank in my 48 D-24 sedan. The car has been sitting for 10 years and I am sure it is gelled up. Do you guys know of a good source for a new tank and any tips or things to add or look out for during this repair? Other items I am interested it are a new mechanical fuel pump and a rebuilt carb perhaps on an exchange? Thank you! -Joel V. Quote
Frank Elder Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Tanks inc. Kind of generic shaped, but a good replacement for our tanks. Quote
TodFitch Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 It would be really inexpensive to clean out the old tank and see if it has leaks or not before dropping dough on a new tank "just because" its been sitting for a while. I used a handful sharp edged gravel (not rounded river stuff) and a bit of shaking to loosen the crud up in mine then washed it out. Cost nothing but an afternoon of "free to me" labor. Just make sure you get all the gravel out when you are done. Quote
greg g Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 the ones they sell for 48 fords are close but the fuel gauge pick up is i a different place so a new hole in the trunk floor is necessary if you want acces without dropping the tank. Quote
martybose Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 I just saw an ad for Tanks that listed a steel tank for something like 46-48 Plymouth's and Dodge's; it caught my eye because it had the correct filler neck. Marty Quote
FlyingDutchman Posted May 13, 2012 Author Report Posted May 13, 2012 Thanks gang! Yeah, I'm definitely going to pull it down and take a look first before replacement, but the previous owner stated he thought the car was out of gas because it died while driving so he went to put 5 gallons in and it only took 2 gallons, so maybe it's jammed up bad? Do any of you have experience with these tanks? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-1941-1948-Dodge-Plymouth-Car-Steel-Gas-Tank-16-gallon-Tanks-Inc-/320897868587?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ab700e32b&vxp=mtr#ht_1259wt_231 Any idea where to get a new mechanical fuel pump or should I switch to one of those universal 6v electric ones? Be Well! -JV Quote
martybose Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 That's the tank I was talking about! The only problem is the statement about not using the OEM fuel level sensor; I don't think there is a version that will work with the stock gauge. Marty Quote
TodFitch Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Any idea where to get a new mechanical fuel pump or should I switch to one of those universal 6v electric ones? I am guessing that the D24 pump would be the same as a P15 pump. So take a look at http://www.ply33.com/Parts/group14#14-73-02. But if the body of your existing is in okay shape you can rebuild it with parts from the Antique Auto Parts Cellar a.k.a Then and Now Automotive. Quote
toddbracik Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 I have used this tank and it works fine. I picked up a single wire sending unit from jcwitney about 10 years ago that does the trick. Quote
54Illinois Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 I rinsed my tank out with mineral sprits and marbles. One gallon at a time, about 4 gallons. Then I applied the Northern tank liner kit...needed two cans though. Cost about $150. Then again, no one makes replacement tanks for a 54 Plymouth! Quote
FESTER60 Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 Here is another way to go. I have used them and it worked great. I just removed mine and it looks real good. Came out easy too. It sure is nice working on a So Cal car. No rust bound nuts or bolts to deal with.http://gastankrenu.com/index.htm Quote
