Greg F Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Figured out that not getting gas from the tank. I did one of those POR 15 treatments to the inside. Is it possible I blocked the outlet? Is there a way to clear it out? If not, where is a good place to get a new tank? Thanks as always...Greg Quote
Greg F Posted February 16, 2012 Author Report Posted February 16, 2012 No. Just poured the stuff in and swished it around. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 I've heard of using an old speedo cable core and a drill as a sort of rotorooter for the fuel line. Quote
busycoupe Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 What kind of car do you have? A D24 gas tank has an internal sintered metal fuel filter. If you line the tank it will block the filter. Dave Quote
Greg F Posted February 16, 2012 Author Report Posted February 16, 2012 47 P-15. That's what I am thinking I may have done. Guess I need to see if my tank has one to, and if so can I drill a hole in it...just another road block errr! Quote
Harold M Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 p15 have a ceramic filter inside the only way into it is to cut the top out of the tank Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 I'd try connecting my air compressor to the tank outlet to see if I could blow the filter off. You'll have another in-line filter on the car anyway. Quote
seabee1950 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 I have a 1950 Plymouth and I am doing a frame off resto,as I was taking it apart I found it had a leak in the tank it was from the drain plug but after taking it down I found that it had a 2x3 cut out in the top that had been welded and I use that term loosely. Anyway looking in though the metering gauge hole I see there is a wire screen on the end of the draw tube. I used my shop vac to blow into the tank to find all the holes then sprayed soapy water to marked them with marker. I have let it set for a while and when its time I will weld it and at that time I will once again using the shop vac to draw air though it. Quote
54Illinois Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 I almost used the bottle of liner in mine, it has the screen filter. The liner would form over the screen. If the tank is off, you should be able to see the filter. Heck, I have flushed and rinsed mine 3x with lacquer thinner. It still has rust in it. I even left marbles in it and let them roll in the bed of my truck for a week. My next step is to see if there are any chemicals that would take off the rust scales. As far as tanks availability, I have yet to find one new. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Put the liner in and put air through the fuel line to keep the flow open. Thats what places like gas tank renu do. Quote

Greg F Posted February 17, 2012 Author Report Posted February 17, 2012 Can't get screen off so just going to order one from Tanks Inc. Thanks for the ideas...GF Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Before you give up on your existing tank , Young Ed mentioned using an old cable , like an old choke cable . If you sharpen the end and put it in your electric drill , it seems like it should drill through your obstruction . As a side note , i have found more than one diameter of these cables . Quote
Greg F Posted February 17, 2012 Author Report Posted February 17, 2012 Thanks Jerry, but after I took it off i realized that besides the screen blocked, the tank had been patched on the bottom. So decided to bite the bullet and spend the $230 on a new tank..OUCH. Just keep buying another part I was not intendind on replacing, makes the wife happy...NOT! Quote
deathbound Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 A competent radiator shop should be able to fix your tank. I recently took mine to get it boiled/cleaned inside & lined....$145. Turns out, to do a "thorough" job & get at each side of the baffle, they completely removed one side of the tank. They didn't tell me this til I went to pick it up. They also brazed a few pinholes & didn't charge any extra for any of this. What I'm trying to say is, save you tank if you can. Or this place:http://www.gas-tank.com/ Quote
