Merle Coggins Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 For those who have an oil filter that uses the sock type filter elements, and has struggled with the oversized Napa 1011 / Wix 51011 filters, I'm here to inform you to try a Baldwin JC405. I purchased a few Baldwin filters a while back to try, and today I decided it was time to change the oil in my truck and give one a try. Compared to the struggle I had with my last Napa filter, squishing, hammering, and pressing the filter into the can, this one was a breeze. I pulled the Baldwin filter out of it's package and pressed it into the canister with one hand, greased up the new gasked, inserted it into the cover, and screwed the cover down. A piece of cake compared to my last filter change. So unless someone comfirms that Napa/Wix has corrected their filter size, and purged all old stock, I will continue to use Baldwin JC405's in my truck. I believe that Hastings is affiliated with the same parent company as Baldwin. They list the same filter as LF501. So if you have a Hastings filter dealer near you, you could also try that one. TheMoose Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 Good to hear! I picked up a JC405 a while back but haven't tried it yet. Quote
1952B3b23 Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 Hey Merle, Where did you find the rubber seal that goes in between the canister and the canister top that screws in? Did it come with the Baldwin filter? Thanks, -Chris Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 6, 2012 Author Report Posted April 6, 2012 Yes, the filters come with gaskets. Merle Quote
TheMoose Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Good to hear!I picked up a JC405 a while back but haven't tried it yet. I fought the Napa filter for an hour before giving up, JC 405 went in easy! Heading to Truck Quip to get some more to keep on the shelf! Quote
TheMoose Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Actually went to Truck Pro, JC 405 $6.75each, bought a case of 12. Quote

TheMoose Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 I guess this is about a 6 year supply! Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 29, 2012 Author Report Posted June 29, 2012 I guess this is about a 6 year supply! 6? You must drive your truck a WHOLE lot more that I drive mine. That stash would last me a dozen years, at least. Quote
TheMoose Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 6? You must drive your truck a WHOLE lot more that I drive mine. That stash would last me a dozen years, at least. It gets driven around 100-200 miles a month at least in nice weather, change oil every 6 months just because. Quote
John-T-53 Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 It gets driven around 100-200 miles a month .... ...As it should be! Made in the USA too...nice! Quote
John-T-53 Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 I was just at the local Napa and asked about ordering the JC-405. The guy looked at me funny, then looked it up, and said it crosses to Napa 1011. They can't get Baldwin products. Where have y'all bought the Baldwin? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 30, 2012 Author Report Posted June 30, 2012 Their web site has a dealer search. There may be a parts store near you that sells them. Otherwise search for online distributors. That's where I got mine. I just don't remember exactly where. Merle Quote
Martin53Cranbrook Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 i went to the Baldwin website and they say to use a P73 style for my 53...anyone know about these and if they are better or same as JC405? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 you bordering on personal preference..and usually local availability Quote
Martin53Cranbrook Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 the only availability i can find is truck shops and they have to order them at $15-$20 a pop :-/ Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 actually if you type in the exact search Baldwin P73 oil filter...you will find a site that will sell you a case of 12 for just a tad over a hundred buck...approx 9.00 each and of course I did not look at shipping but I still think you will find it a bit of a savings and your worry about filters for a period of time somewhat no longer a headache.. John-T-53 Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 (edited) The P73 looks like the Napa 1080, a pleated paper element. I've used the 1080 in mine, but it's not a depth media element like the sock type. It'll filter the oil no prob, but might clog up quicker. Some have said the pleated elements are designed to flow from the outside in, where most of the canisters we have on our flatties flow from the inside out. On the other hand, the Napa 1011 (sock) has a small internal open area (the intake side). The correct sock filter should have a large internal area for the purposes of not clogging. Check out this Purolator I got on Ebay a few months back. It fit perfect. Edited June 30, 2012 by John-T-53 Quote
Martin53Cranbrook Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 http://www.baldwinfiltersrus.com/baldwin_filters/part_lookup/P73/ Awesome! Thanks Tim! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 you are welcome and it looks like a good deal overall..especially when you don't have a speciality shop in your immediate area..we suffer from that in my locale..I feel your pain, but in all honesty anything you can ask here is often found on the internet quicker with a source and price and all for a single entry of less than 10 words..maybe I am the exception but I always exhaust my internet resources prior to posting on the forum..
