normanpitkin Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 hi ,my chrysler new yorker 1948 had a problem not charging recently and have replaced the generator but now the voltage regulator needs to be fixed or repaired. Are the solid state replacements any good or should i just bite the bullet and buy one from andy birnbaum's?Thanks in advance,am also considering a pertronix replacement for the points but have heard it can make the car hard to start? MarkAubuchon Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 As Ed said, you can buy a new one from any of the box retailers. Quote
normanpitkin Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 Ah,did I forget to mention I am in London ,England, sadly the existence of box retailers is only a legend in these parts...anything on eBay maybe? Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Have you polarized the new Genny ? Quote
normanpitkin Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 Yep,first thing! It tests fine ,am supposing it can only be the regulator as I cannot think what else it could be! Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 The regulator needs a good ground. Quote
busycoupe Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 The regulator is not very complicated. The service manual has instructions for setting the contact point gaps. I was able to open mine, clean the contacts with a point file and check the gaps. It now works great. Might be worth a try before ordering one overseas. Dave Quote
