It looks like it has an odometer, wonder if it might be a speedometer for an early car? Or the odometer part could be a hour meter, but don't think so, too many didgets? your guess is as good as mine?:D

I have seen a few like that. All have been a Tach and hour meter like these.

I wouldn't think you could make an odometer work in a car driven by the tach . When you shifted it would generate errors as to miles as it has no way to adjust for the tranny gears.

Looking at the scales speed to 45 tach to 2500, my guess would be a marine application, with the odo being a hours meter.

My guess would be a 30's wooden inboard style.

This Ebay Engine RPM Tach shown is close to the MoPar factory authorized engine RPM Motor Mile tach. But it has a 1000 RPM too high (4500)scale. Correct scale is 3500 RPM.

Here are a couple pics of a factory white face ( some were black) original Stewart Warner 3500 RPM tach. It's hard to see but on the bottom of the face it says "Engine Revolutions per minute". You need the correct distributor to drive the cable for the tach too.

Most commercial, heavy duty, marine, and aero engines have an hour meter that records time the engine is running, as they spend a lot of time idling, show that shows wear and indicates mantenence needs more precisely than miles down the road in a car or light truck. I would imagine (just guessing) that the motor mile meter is a compromise which runs off the mechanical tach drive with a variable gear set (like an early version of the CVT transmission) that takes running rpms, and calculates a "distance travelled" based on running time and engine speed, rather than running a clock when the ignition is on.
