anyone have any clear shots of the layout on the firewall? Inside and ouside would be perfect. One thing I neglected to do before the tear down and things may have been modified/missing.

thanks

the drip tube from the vent, where which wires and cables go thru the wall. Pretty much the whole thing, I'll have to make sure to reverse the pictures tho! :P

Here you go...

Disregard my drip tube though as I have extended mine a little. They should only protrude an inch or two... and take into consideration that my truck right hand drive.

cool thanks. on the loom the choke, throttle and oil pressure go thru there?

Posted

Throttle, choke and temp go through the elongated hole with the metal (silver) clamp. Oil pressure goes through a rubber grommet to the top of the firewall between the horn bracket and where the electrical wire loom comes out through another rubber grommet (best seen in my first photo).

Dave - What kind of spark plug wires and caps are those? Don't think I've seen those before. Thanks - Mark

Is it typical to have the vehicle identification plate mounted Up Over on the firewall. Ours are Down Under the drivers door mounted to the "A" Pillar.

I'm working on guages, etc. I see you have a metal line for oil, mine has a plastic. I am guessing that the plastic is not preferred, oil gets hot and if that leaks ... not good.

(2) My temp guage (off market) has a copper wire surrounded by a coil. I take it that is different than the original either ones, is that correct.

that is the way my temp gauge is as well, as was the one I sold with the cluster to a guy here. I think those are the "original" types.

My oil pressure gauge line is a 2 piect metal line with a splice joint near the firewall. I believe this is original. At least it was original to this truck when I got it. Plastic line is common to aftermarket gauges and is fine as long as it doesn't chafe against something sharp.

And yes, the original temp gauge capilary tubes have a coil protective wrap too.

I have an extra piece of line that goes from the gauge to the firewall if you need it.

before you send it anywhere can you make an outline trace of it for me to copy for my truck?

Actually I have two. Want it?

a trace would be fine, I'm redoing mine in the cupro-nickle stuff from FedHill so NO MORE RUST!

the ID plate appears to read "DE SOTO Trucks" in any case.

Mark: the spark plug caps are bakerlite. It's a long story but the fella that did a lot of my mechanical rebuild had crate fulls of NOS Mopar parts. He said that lead plugs like mine were fitted to a lot of vehicles here in Oz in those days. He just happened to have most of them in stock at the time that I was restoring my truck.

Hank: our ID plates are mostly mounted to the firewall. I haven't seen a truck here yet where they are mounted otherwise.

Wally: we were fortunate here to be offered trucks in the Desoto brand. I am told that they were the 'top of the line' in those days (meaning that they were offered with more accessories than the Dodge or Fargo). My 52 didn't have any fancy bits on it when I got it - but now supports an 802 radio, internal mirror, left rear vision mirror, and soon (hopefully) an underdash NOS ashtray.
