BobT-47P15 Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 One of the casualties of the May 22 Joplin tornado was my favorite donut shop, Dude's Daylight Donuts, on our Main Street. Been family operated since it was started in 1954. The best way I can describe their donuts and things like maple bars is - they aren't quite as puffed up as others. Heard on the tv news tonite, the shop will be back in operation tomorrow morning. It will be interesting to see if the items made with brand new equipment come out the same. Progress is being made in rebuilding both homes and businesses, but it kind of slow. There are 30 to 40 new houses going up in our subdivision now. Ours is coming along, but has a ways to go yet. The front door was installed yesterday. Wiring, plumbing and insulation are in place, with sheet rock being delivered yesterday. Probably be after the first of the year when done......but that's OK. The latest pic from yesterday. Meanwhile, Dale continues to work on the Plymouth..... Quote
PatS.... Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Looks good, Bob...tough way to upgrade, though. Looks like the weather is co-operating. Minus 16C here today, brisk north wind and some snow. (-16 degrees C = 3.2 degrees F) Quote
greg g Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Hey that looks like a house..........Hope it works out for a Happy New Year. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 thank goodness..now the city can save all that gasoline expense on the patrol cars...! Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Sounds like a dount run to Joplin may be in order. And I need a haircut so there are 2 reasons to go. Quote
oldodge41 Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 I love "dense" donuts. The heavier the better. Glad to see the progress on the house and the car. Quote
hkestes41 Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Bob, Are they reopening in the same location? That is the one that used to be next to the old Devore's western store isn't it? If it is the one I'm thinking of I agree with you they had excellent donuts especially the maple bars. We will be coming through Joplin sometime next Sunday on our way home from Springfield. It will be my wifes first time back since the Tornado, while much of the debris is now likely gone I am sure she will get an eye opener. Quote
randroid Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 Bob, I see that as a sign of progress toward what we conceive as normality! Realistically, when the small and almost insignificant factors of a community (in this case a donut shop) begin to function once again that's a harbinger of better times to come, or, at least, harder times behind us. I noticed a bulge in the trunk lid (about half-way between the brake light and the latch) in the photo of Dale toiling because I have one quite similar in Pigiron's buttocks and have never been able to figure out how to go about removing it. I suppose that if I were to cut out the bracing behind it and re-weld the bracing once the lid was correct it wouldn't be too difficult to make it just so, but cutting and welding are options not immediately at hand for me. Is he planning on correcting it or are you satisfied with simply living with it? If he does put it back to original I sure would appreciate some pictures of how he does it. -Randy Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 20, 2011 Author Report Posted November 20, 2011 Randy, there is a normal curve in the lid, but I don't think it's excessive. However, it was a tiny bit humped because the car had been in an accident years ago. Dale didn't do much....may have pulled on the bottom edge of the lid a bit is all. Didn't warrant anything like cutting or welding. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 20, 2011 Author Report Posted November 20, 2011 Yes, Kirk, that shop is on about 23rd and Main, or thereabouts. When I stopped in this afternoon, to buy some maple bars, they said they had owned the building just to the north of them.....which was also destroyed. For some reason, which I will hear later, they decided to build on that lot......so still essentially in the same place. However, the new store is a metal building with a red roof instead of the former concrete structure. The maple bars were still kind of "thin" like the old ones.....good news! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted November 21, 2011 Author Report Posted November 21, 2011 (edited) Don & Kirk-----the new Dude's looks like this. They relocated about 50 feet to the north, onto a piece of ground formerly occupied by an audio-video repair business. They owned that building. Why they moved that little bit, I haven't learned yet. They did tell me that one piece of equipment lost in the storm was an automatic glazing machine - which is not made any more. They said it could coat a lot of donuts in a fairly short time.
