JohnTeee Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 Rebuild on the carb is going well, seems like I did one MANY years ago. I'm ready to put it back together and on, but have a question about the "Tube - Main Vent" in the bottom of the bowl. Part # 36; covered by plug #35 in the diagram below. I've pulled the plug and, from the looks of things, expected the vent tube to drop out. There does not seem to be anywhere to access the 'upper' end I can see it up in there, but can't get it out.. Soaked bowl in carb cleaner for two hours, sprayed carb cleaner in the opening and tried a little compressed air. Tapped the sides, top and bottom with the wood handle of my hammer, reached up in with a pair of fine pickups and tried to pull it out, nothing. Do I have a problem? Can I just leave it alone? Air from the compressor comes out in the throat someplace, so it does not seem to be plugged. Cheers! John Quote
Young Ed Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 Just leave it. You need a puller. Quote
JohnTeee Posted November 18, 2011 Author Report Posted November 18, 2011 Thanks Ed! Back together we go, then. Cheers! John Quote
JohnTeee Posted November 18, 2011 Author Report Posted November 18, 2011 Back to finishing this up. I've got the 'Maxium Pump Travel' after a little confusion. No adjustment needed. Now to the float level adjustment. I've watched and got the general idea down. I find a little variation across the top of my float, but am basically going along one of the flat surfaces somewhere between the end and the seam. The dang ruler that came in it measures in 32nds of an inch, while the instructions call for me to adjust in 64ths of an inch!!! Guess it will be to the closest 3/32" to hit the 5/64".Onward. Cheers! 55 Fargo Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 Set it slightly lower say to 1/8 inch, to allow for expanding modern fuel to help with hard hot starts.... Quote
greg g Posted November 18, 2011 Report Posted November 18, 2011 expereince has shown (at least mine) that the float should be set a bit lower than factory for dealing with enthanol flavored gasoline. Maybe not so much in cooler temps but in the summer leaving a little more room for it to expand into cures a lot of hot weather perculation problems, as this stuff expands with less heat than tho old gasoline it was designed for. An extra 32nds works for me. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 This is the tool required to remove the tube. Quote
JohnTeee Posted November 19, 2011 Author Report Posted November 19, 2011 This is the tool required to remove the tube. Aha, that 'splains why that puppy didn't want to come out! Glad I didn't try to have my way with it. Cheers! John Quote

JohnTeee Posted November 19, 2011 Author Report Posted November 19, 2011 Sounds like I should be alright where I am for the winter, but may want to revisit this in the summer. I don't run the ethanol fuels when I can avoid it; might be cheaper, but the mileage is much lower. Thanks all! Cheers! John Quote
IanT_Qld Posted October 2, 2012 Report Posted October 2, 2012 I rebuilt my carb yesterday, and did not fix my problem of leaking fuel out the accelerator pump. Thanks also to mikecarberetors for positing the rebuild video. My sons have been telling me forever you can find how to do anything on Youtube. Put in new gaskets and needle and seat (the old one only had a fine ware mark, but since i had a new on in it went. I didnt change any of the check balls or jet, perhaps i will do that today and hopfullly get it right. Cheers Quote
