Andydodge
O/k, the crank front pulley on my 1941 plymouth leaks like a sieve........I bought what I thought would be a replacement hub from ebay to go on the pulley. It was listed as a "Crankshaft Vibration Hub # 677450". This number was listed in my 36-42 Plymouth Parts book as only for a 1942 P14.......the price was right so I thought I'd have a go........lol........well its arrived and its similar but different to the one thats in the car....the new part what I have got is the correct size to go into the timing chain cover/seal with the same size centre hole and seal running surface. It has 6 threaded 5/16th UNF holes equidistant around the flange and is shown on page 167 of the Condensed Master parts List for 1936-42 Plymouth........ My questions are........ Does the 1942 onwards Plymouth have a harmonic balancer attached between the "crank vibration hub" and the front pulley?. Has anyone had experience in swapping/comparing the various permutations that there appear to be of the crank pulley/balancer Does anyone know which yr Plymouth started using the narrow pulleys. ......thanks Andy Douglas
OldDad67
I've been trying to find out the same thing on my 49 P15. It came with the balancer and the 52 motor I have doesn't have one. I read an article that said in 48 the special deluxe came with the balancer but the standard engine did not. I'm hoping someone can tell me if the balancer can be used on all engines. I believe the 50 model came with the narrow belts for the first time.
Andydodge
Oldad, thanks for the reply, you'd think that this would be relatively straightforward, ie, it was used from such & such a year, but it seems that its use was very spasmodic......."eerrr Fred, look what Bill found behind the washroom.....a box of 100 harmonic balancers, we'd better put them on these here cars coming down the line now!!" .......lol.................its almost like this........and as a further help to confuse the issue........ Does anyone know whether the pulley/balancer from a 25" engine will fit on a 23" engine?.......anyone?........thanks, andyd
desoto1939
Ok here is some information that I was able to verify from my Motors Flat Rate book. These books are great becasue they also list the various major parts that were oftern repaired at the local garages. So i suggest that you pickup one at the next swap meet. The 1941 Ply deluuxe and Special deluxe does not have any listing for a vibration dampener. The 1942-47 which my book covers lists a vibration dampener for bothe the Deluxeand Special Deluxe. Andydodge
Rich, many thanks for that info.........my problem is that living in Australia means that most if not all those books that you guys refer to were never easily available or seen or sold in Oz........I have been playing with mopars since 1969 & my 1940 Dodge since 1971, the ONLY book I have ever seen at swap meets, ebay etc is a Chrysler Australia 1936-1942 Service manual. this was printed by a company for Chrysler Australia & is the only official Chrysler Workshop manual for these years in Australia. There is NO parts book, paint chart, assembly manual or one year only manual that was readily available to the public in Oz. A couple of years ago there was a fellow aussie on this board who stated that he had a copy of an Australian Chrysler Parts Book that was used by the Oz State Distributors and as it was "an Official Chrysler document" he couldn't let mere motals like me and other Oz mopar enthusiasts view it.........my feeling then and now are that this guy is and was both ends & middle of a MORON......he had a book 40,50,60 yrs old put out by a company that no longer exists and wouldn't share it.......a cretonous moron!............lol........I am pretty sure that what he had I rememberseeing at the State Distributor ship but it was behind the counter for "parts Man" only to view...... .so what we poor bastards here in Oz have to do is get various US books, manuals etc when we see them on ebay and then try and interpret how relevant they are on this side or the world..........lol..........anyway, apologies for my rant...........will go take my meds now.........lol.................regards, andyd
Guest P15-D24
and install a new seal on the timing chain housing. Or the original repair method was to braze (Repeat BRAZE, NOT WELD) filler material into the hub groove, then turn it back down to spec. OldDad67
Don't they have a speedi sleeve to repair the balancer now?
Plymouthy Adams
speedi-sleeve, division of Chicago Rawhide has their own web site and has more listing than you could shake a stick at....I have seen their list of prducts by size on the internet..find the chart and get the number..if not stocked at your local store..their distributor should be able to send it in to them on request...sometimes they have the application..sometimes not..but you can use you micrometer or calipher to measure your shaft and get the item you need.
