The wife and I planned to go to her home town and celebrate the holiday with her family. Decided to have some fun and talked Dad out of his 64 Fury for the trip. The week leading up to departure he and I went over it and checked fluids, washed and waxed, checked tires etc. While checking the last couple things under the hood Dad says " that battery looks a little old wanna change it?". I removed it and couldn't find a date stamp so I said " Its been working just fine why change it?" On the way out of town we stopped at Dads to put some air in the spare tire(which I forgot to check when I did the other four). Go to restart the car to leave and click click. Dad was up at the cabin surviving the huge storm that came through WI. I'll post some pictures of that in another thread. I knew he had just put a new battery in the 66 Fury so I liberated that and installed it in the 64. Even that wasn't quite as easy as it could have been the 64 had a smaller battery than the 66 so I had to make some quick mods to the battery hold down.

I was a little uneasy about the rocky start to the trip but after the battery change the car performed flawlessly. According to google just the drive round trip was 562miles plus we did a little driving around town while there and used a total of 30.2miles. Not bad for a 318 auto.

Ed,

My Dad bought a new 65 Fury III and I remember the day he drove it home from the dealer (summer of 1965). I learned how to drive in this car long before he actually taught me. I use to take it out of the garage and drive it to school, sometimes skipped school and headed for the beach. My dad only used the car on weekends. God rest his soul, I never told him. He did have a big argument with the dealer the first year he had the car about having to replace the brakes after so few miles. Of course I always disconnected the speedometer cable whenever I drove the Fury. Must have put 15K on the car in the first year with the speed-o disconnected. Those were the days.

Of course as the years went on I felt guilty about the unsanctioned driving so I wound up rebuilding the motor and replacing the transmission for him. He drove that car for a good 20 years. Always said it was the best car he ever owned but thought the dealer was a crook.

Chet what body style? Dad has the 64 Fury 4dr sedan and a 66 Fury III 6pass wagon.

The '64 Plymouths are nice cars and that is a sharp example. The '64 Sport fury with a big block and four speed is one of my dream cars.

This thing with a wideblock 318 and a torqueflite will toss you back pretty good. I can only imagine one with with a big block and a 4spd.

Ed - My Dad had me purchase a car for him in 1969. I ended up getting him a 63 Belvedere 4 door with slant 6 and auto with 68,000 miles. I think when the car left the family it had about 150K with no engine or transmission problems. It was reliable and nice to drive. Other than the dash and grille the 63 wasn't much different than your Dad's 64.

I guess if I were to have my head jump time and have the urge for a muscle car..this is the baby I would seek out...the 413 Max Wedge and this body style just go hand in hand..of course..its a love it or hate it body style to most..

As long as we’re talking 64 Fury’s, here’s mine. After 20 years, I finally finished it last year. I literally put the carburetor on it, backed it out of the garage, hooked up the teardrop, and put 4800 miles on it going to the meet in Portland, Oregon.
