Young Ed Posted June 9, 2011 Report Posted June 9, 2011 The 39-47 trucks and I believe the pilot house trucks also use a large cast piece that is riveted to the back of the frame to support the back of the rear leaf springs. These are always worn out. They are available new but aren't that cheap. I noticed my dakota using a similar item on the side of its frame. Now since I'm planning on a modern rear end for my next project anyways would it be feasable to transfer the mounting system of this as well? Of course some careful measuring would be called for. Here's the 39-47 system Quote
Young Ed Posted June 9, 2011 Author Report Posted June 9, 2011 Oh and I think this is a dakota one. If I can trust google images Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 9, 2011 Report Posted June 9, 2011 looks Dakota to me Ed..se that rear cross member that the shocks mounts on..anyone doing a Dakota clip would be wise to grab this crossmember..and if you don't know what for...I will not clutter your mind with drivel Quote
Young Ed Posted June 9, 2011 Author Report Posted June 9, 2011 Tim thats another interesting thought. The upper frame mounts on the 39-47s tend to break. I bet you could modify that crossmember and replace both of the stock frame mounts. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 9, 2011 Report Posted June 9, 2011 it is also a classic look to the strength of the metal in regard to shock dampening...keep in mind also if you will when looking at this light metal that they are riveted to only the top small section of the thin walled C-channel frame..and further...regard that these are trucks with fully loaded (often overladed) with cargo..I assure you these do not substain damage through normal use...and that the extra holes in the middle actually add strength to the unit.. Young Ed Posted June 9, 2011 Author Report Posted June 9, 2011 Tim I can assure my dakota has been loaded and overloaded many times. My rear springs are weak now but last time I was under there that shock bar was fine. Quote
NiftyFifty Posted June 9, 2011 Report Posted June 9, 2011 Can't see any reason why that won't work, you will have a shorter distance between shackles if you use the dakots mounts, as the PH and older leafs are pretty darn long. Mine seemed on on my 1ton, but if I had to swap again I would deff try what your doing Quote
Desotodav Posted June 9, 2011 Report Posted June 9, 2011 Have you got any friends that venture 'down under' Ed? I have a few sets of the rear spring rear suspension mounts in amongst my bits here in Oz, but it would be way too expensive to send them over to you. I sent a couple of the rear mounts for the front springs over to Hank (just in case someone needed some over there) and the weight made it quite pricey. Although, I wonder how a person would go getting on a plane with the mounts in this day and age? Desotodav Quote
Dave72dt Posted June 10, 2011 Report Posted June 10, 2011 It may depend on which springs you decide to use. The Dakota may have different width leaves. If you plan on using the Cherokee dif, check the spring mounts and dimension on that also. If it works out, you may not hae to move the spring pads on thew axle. More careful measuring but I think you've got a viable option with those Dakota hangers. Quote
