michael.warshaw Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 well as most know my project is almost done 2 years later, i want to install a good stereo as the factory 602 radio wont cut the mustard for me since i am a huge audophile. any suggestions on where to install the head unit? im guessing glove box. mikemaker Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 CD player crammed in the glove box and a pair of 6x9's on the package shelf of the business coupe. Works well for me. Quote
randroid Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Gents, I've read where a number of forum members have stashed CD players, etc, in their glove boxes and that has always bothered me just a taste because of the presumed heat they would generate from their motors. I would think some sort of ventilation, like holes drilled through the glove box, would be in order. I know the glove boxes aren't hermetically sealed and the players don't put out much heat but the thought is still in my mind. Any input on that? -Randy Quote
michael.warshaw Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Posted May 25, 2011 I THINK IM GONNA PUT THE HEad unit in glove and 1 box with 10 sub in back, and speakers in kick panels. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 To run anything more than a basic radio/cd player you need to convert to 12v. Mike I thought you were staying 6v. If you want a decent radio send the 602 into www.turnswitch.com Quote

If you want a decent radio send the 602 into www.turnswitch.com I have a turnswitch unit, and I used to be pretty high on it. It's OK, but for how much I paid, I think a positive method to turn on the auxiliary would have been a better set-up. The auxiliary turns on when the input has enough volume. When the volume gets low or even the sound pauses, the unit has a tendency to abruptly switch to FM until there is enough volume for the auxiliary to kick in again. Radio also has a tendency to lock on to an FM signal, and no amount of tuning will get it to switch frequencies. Not a problem in the big city as there are several strong frequencies, but when traversing rural Kansas, it can be a real bother. Right after a radio that's barely tuned in, no thing more annoying to me than missing the intro to "Stairway to Heaven." Quote

Don Coatney Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I do not have a radio in my P-15 nor do I want one. The sound of my engine and dual glasspacks is music enough for me. Quote

You will need to convert to 12v to get the type of stereo that you want. A 12v converter cannot handle that much amperage. Turnswitch is essentially a basic AM/FM radio housed in an old case. Quote
Eneto-55 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 My son put an amp in the trunk of his 75 Dart, and wired in a 1/8" phone plug under the dash, where he plugs in his MP3 player. That car is 12VDC already, of course, but the MP3 player is very small, and he just carries it with him when he leaves the car some place. i haven't decided what I will do for my 46 (whenever I get that far). Ramon Angulo Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 I'm running 2 6x9 in the rear deck and 2 5 inch speakers in the kick panels and 1 10 inch sub in the trunk. My deck is in the glove box. I had to run a seperate battery since my 48 is 6 volt. I only drive it once in a while so having to charge the battery isn't much of an issue and last quite a long time! I have to listen to my oldies when I'm crusing! Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 you can install Secret Audio it can be installed anywhere....... under the seat in the trunk..... speakers also go under the seat they have woofers & tweeters what ever you want for the sound you want ,,,, u control it with a remote .. just google Secret Audio.. Big_John Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 There was a thread on the HAMB about this. Some interesting ideas there. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=548824 I kicked around some ideas for my Chrysler, but decided for now to go with a cheap motorcycle amplifier (I love Ebay!) to use with my XM radio along with a Retro Sound 6x9 dual coil speaker that will mount right where the factory speaker was. My car never had a radio or clock and I want to keep that clean look. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Posted May 25, 2011 went to the store today, there are so many options its hard to pick alpine makes really nice stuff, ans so does jl audio. Quote
bobostski Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 I use a 12 V battery and put it in an old bowling ball bag in the trunk to hide it. Quote
meadowbrook Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 My dad took the Mopar 607 radio from my 50 Dodge, repaired it and placed an input for an Ipod on it. My Ipod picks up FM radio, so now I can play AM, FM and whatever I record in the Ipod. I tell folks my old radio plays Ipods but you have to wait a few seconds for it to warm up Quote
Young Ed Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Yup I had the same thing done to my 802 by a guy in our car club. Except my ipod is old and doesn't have radio built in... Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 HOW CAN I BOOST THE SIGNAL on my stock 1949 PLYMOUTH radio ?? also how do i get rid of all the static ?? radio is newly rebuilt .. thanx for any input ... Quote
greg g Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Does your generator have a condensor on it?? Some cars put a condensor on the coil to poits wire also. Are you using resistor plugs or wires?? There should be a screw on the radio some where that allows you to trim the radio to the antenna. You find a station in the low 1200's and then rotate the screw to gain the best reception. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 I use a 12 V battery and put it in an old bowling ball bag in the trunk to hide it. Hmmmmm.. that sound's like a good idea. Thanks, Tom Quote
adam_knox Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 Hey Bobostki and Ramon how long does that 12v battery hold a charge when used? How often do have to charge it? We go to the drive in sometimes and I'm afraid to leave my radio on as I'm pretty sure the car won't start if I have it going the entire time (it's a 6v with a 12v converter to the stereo). D batteries for the boombox ain't cheap. A spare 12 volt would take up a lot less space.... Quote

Have been to triple features, and have had no problems starting even when listening through our tube radio w/ FM converter for over 6 hours. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 There's a drive-in near you? I read somewhere that there was a revival for drive-ins but never heard much since. Quote
Martin53Cranbrook Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 i am going to do that Ipod single speaker idea, that's just what i needed  Quote
