oldcarlover Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 I adjusted my intake @ .008 and exhaust @.010 when engine was hot as per tech info. I still have ticking that I can hear from inside the car. I know loose is better than tight but the ticking is annoying. Should I go a bit tighter or look into new tappets? Quote
1941Rick Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 I would doubt new tappets alone will cure the ticking noise. It could be a combination of cam and tappets, as they will wear together....can you isolate if it is all or some that are noisy? How is the timing chain? There will always be some valve noise as they are solid lifters.....maybe turn up the radio Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 If you slip a feeler gauge between the valve stems and the tappets while the engine is running, you will discover which one is making noise. When you get to the noisy one, it will suddenly get quiet. You might want to wear gloves so you don't burn your hands on the exhaust manifold. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 It is possible to have worn tappets. They get dished out so the feeler gauge still reads correctly but the valve is actually sitting down into the tappet. Quote

The engine shop where I had my work done showed me the worn tappets from my engine and they were dished. They were able to gring them flat and true. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 Read this thread.... http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=26810 Here's what mine looked like. It was cupped at close to .014" which threw off the adjustment be a factor of two. BTW... I don't think I've ever seen the measurement of .008" for the valves, where are you guys finding that? Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 there is the possibility that grinding these flush with a good smooth finish(please don't ask what micron finish ok) and then sending them out to be Parkerized, installed with ample Molybnedelyum disufide paste at the proper speed and time for break in that you may be good to go..usually hardening is only a few thou deep..maybe .006 to .010 Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 Why, heck. I've got all that stuff in my garage. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 that settles it..go see Joe...I have only the disufide in powder form that I mix my own paste..stuff is as close to snake oil as you will ever get.. Quote
james curl Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 We used to run the stuff in the transmission and rear end in my buddy's 32 Ford Coupe that he drag raced, used in the wheel bearings and in the oil of the old flat head Ford. We thought it was a magical powder and grease. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 29, 2011 Report Posted April 29, 2011 nothing more than microscopic ball bearing suspended in oil..has a high shear also.. Quote
