1947-D24 Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 :confused:I have a problem with the passenger side front brakes pulling to the right after I drive about a mile or so. After awhile it clears up. It sure does give you a scare when it happens. Is there an easy fix for this? What would be envolved in changing the front brakes to a more modern drum type brake? Any help would be appreciated. Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 I'm not familiar with a D-24 but suspect it already has drum brakes on it. I'd suspect the problem to be a bad brake hose on that corner or wheel cylinder/s sticking especially if it happens each time you hit the brakes. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 A misadjusted or brake fluid soaked shoe will also do that. Quote
JBNeal Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 Sometimes if the brakes pull to the right, then it's the left brakes that aren't engaging properly. If the problem goes away then returns, it sounds like the piston is hanging up in its bore. Quote
silvernickel3 Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 I'm having problems getting good-safe brakes. I have peddle but it becomes soft when the car doesn't stop safely. No pulls, just soft peddle and dangerously not stopping the car. Help. silvernickel3 Harry 336-816-2182 Quote
olddodgeguy Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 If the peddle is getting soft when you step on it and hold pressure on the peddle it probably is leaking internally in the master cylinder. I would either replace the MC or rebuild it. Probably wouldn't hurt to do that anyway as part of the maintainence. Mike Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 22, 2011 Report Posted March 22, 2011 Plan on replacing all the lines and hoses, rebuilding the master and wheel cylinders. I'm replacing lines on my daily I put on new less than 10 years ago. Moved it a little to access a bolt and created a leak. Unless you KNOW they're good, replace them. Quote

I would clean them and sand the lining and it would stillhappen. I talked to some brake guys and they have stated that they are finding that the newer brake material without the asbestos are now starting to harden and glaze up sooner then the older brake material. I had to replace the lining and shoes and the pbm went away. Do you have riveted lining or bobded lining? If you have riveted then you can get some old asbestos lining and rerevit the linings to the shoes. I have done several sets of shoes and it is an easy job to do. I have several brake catalogs and manuals and will be able to provide info on this area. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote

I suspect most of these mentioned would be more consistent. I have new wheel cylinders and shoes. I'm told that this is just the nature of the beast. Would it make since to change to the "newer" single wheel cylinder Bendix type setup? Would this be a big deal? Quote

Would it make since to change to the "newer" single wheel cylinder Bendix type setup? Would this be a big deal? Does the pulling stop after driving the car awhile and after the brakes have warmed up? I get this same issue whenthe car has sat for a long time in the garage. I feel it might be some moisture that has been soaked up from the air, and I use that terminolgy very loosely. The shoes are asbestos and since we do not use the car every day the air has moisture in it and the brake lining could be holding onto the moisture and this builds up. After driving and hitting the brakes the lining gets hot and burns off the moisture. This is just a thought any thoughts!!!!! Rich Hartung Quote
