thrashingcows Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 For the last couple months I've been searching for the "right" back up light for ol' Fernando. I've scoured E-bay looking at different lights from all mopar cars and trucks. But nothing seemed "Right" to me. Most were round and with the square, boxy tail lights and brake light, they just didn't seem to work for me. Well one night a couple weeks ago I was rummaging through the archives here and came across a "Back up lights" thread from 2007. And Mr Tim Adams had posted a pic of his car with these rectangular back up lights. As soon as I saw those I knew those were the ones for my car. A couple posts down he then said where he got them from.... ...these are Hella brand...the rear housing is that of the 356 Porsche, these were found mounted on a Renault R10 I understand...slightly different than the VW series. Due to their shape and size I found them more in line with the theme of the rear lights.. Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 22, 2011 Author Report Posted February 22, 2011 So here are a couple pics. Mine are from a VW bus, but are still Hella glass lenses, which I like since all other lenses are glass, and the trim is stainless. And mocked up on the car. Used a couple magnets to hold it in place. I think they will work, and look great. Quote
normanpitkin Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 I always wonder how bright (and therefore how useful)these are with a six volt set up.Not only that sometimes there only appears to be one! Quote
PatS.... Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Looks just like Walter P hisself had it designed to be there...nice job. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 I always wonder how bright (and therefore how useful)these are with a six volt set up.Not only that sometimes there only appears to be one! do as the Germans did..with the glass lens one could easily burn halogen bulbs..no melt down... Brian, good looking assemblies, look right at home....VW bus is a source I did not know about..but finding one of them these days is a bit tough also... Quote
Young Ed Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 I've got a pair of these on my 51 ply. The previous owner who installed them told me the car won't start in reverse because these lights suck so much juice. They are also designed to be used 1 per car and we typically install 2. Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 22, 2011 Author Report Posted February 22, 2011 Well I plan on converting to 12V, so my options for bright lights increases a bit. And I'm not using the housings that came with them...maybe. I might put some super bright LED's behind the lenses and then only drill a small hole for the wiring to run through the body. Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Looks good TC might do something like this for my 47 Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 22, 2011 Author Report Posted February 22, 2011 Looks good TC might do something like this for my 47 I think if you turn them the up/down they would look fine on the back of your Chrysler. I got to see these in person before I ordered them since a friend of mine has a bug, and he just so happened to have a set of these mounted to his back bumper. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 It looks as though being mounted below the taillights, the bumber will block most of the light on the ground. But I can't imagine anywhere else they could be mounted for better lighting. Sure do look good though, they fit the design very nicely. Quote

I thought the same thing, BUT at least there will be something lit up for the unobservant masses to hopefully see. Quote
