tom'sB2B Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 I need to replace my front brake shoes. I went to Napa today with no success. I was told that they no longer carry them, but I'm a little skeptical about the ability of the kid behind the counter. Has anyone been able to get them from Napa and have a part number? If not, I guess I can get them from Robert's As a side note. I guess it would be smart to save every piece that comes off this truck from now on, including the old brake shoes and cylinders. Things are just going to get harder and harder to find and everything will have to be rebuilt and resleeved instead of replaced. Quote
Bob_Koch Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Many places will reline your old brake shoes. Look through your phone book, you can probably find someone not too far away. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 I looked in the 1988 Napa master parts brake book. Front 10" bonded shoes are # B97's. Rear 11" are #B44. Each # is a set of 4 shoes. These generally are for 1948-53 Dodge 1/2 tons. See if the Napa kid can do anything with these old numbers or get a good counter guy with lotsa experience- otherwise have em relined. Bob Quote
HanksB3B Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Don't let go of your cores, whatever they charge. Ideal situation is to have a complete set front & rear that you alternately have relined. Mine cost $11 per wheel to reline. Hank Quote
rustyzman Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 My parts buddy at NAPA (who is The MAN for parts) checked out my '54s fronts when I was looking and though the part number was good, locater showed no remaining inventory anywhere and no plans to restock. Perhaps yours is different. I got a set at Kanter/Packard. $60. I have the old cores and will eventually get them relined if the drums outlive the shoes. Put the part number into napaonline.com and check it out. They have a pretty nice website. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Call these folks as they most likely have them or they can re-line your shoes. Quote
grey beard Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 A few years ago I did my Pilohouse brakes and ordered everything from Andy Bernbumm - got all new shoes - even marked NEW on each shoe - plus wheel cylinders and ms - all still working well after a few thousand miles. These parts are still very much available but you must go to a MoPar parts specialist. Methinks we've outrun NAPA'S reach for an ever-increasing amount of parts that fit our vehicles. My local NAPA guy is a real parts guru and he looks stuff up for me and says, " They got this or that in east Egypt somewhere but that's all the stock the conmputer shows." Pretty soon we'll all be mated at the hip - hip pocket, that is - to the NoPar parts guys in MA. Uggggggghhh!! Quote
Young Ed Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Yes you are certainly right not to toss the cores. The local place here charges $100 core charge for these mopar shoes. Quote
