Project A.D.D...anyone else suffer from this?

I seem to be suffering from a bad case of "project a.d.d."!!! :) I find it almost impossible to concentrate on one project at a time! Does anyone else suffer from this irratating disorder?

One contributing factor is that I hate to pass up what I think it a good deal...so I just picked up a 61 Ford Unibody and a 289 to put in it ($500 total for both) . I also just couldn't let a friend send a Chevy 235 Inline 6 to the scrap yard (got it for free)!

I am now trying to convince myself to not go pick up two rusted out Willys Jeeps that someone I know is going to haul across the scales...that and trying to avoid searching for a project to put that 235 in...ha ha!!!

Booker T,

I say go for as many of those projects as you can store somewhere because they won't be available forever, and if you really get tired of looking at one you can always talk to a Highschool shop teacher who wants a project for his students next year. More than one of us got inspired to wrench on these beasts at that age.

Don't call it ADD when you want to jump from project-to-project because we're not in this for the money and, speaking for myself, I haven't ever seen a stopwatch hanging off the back of my pants. We do this as a diversion from the "real" world and because (for the most part) we enjoy it, and when we are finished with it we have something few others can discuss. I honestly feel a tinge of sympathy for anyone who buys a hulk and has it towed to a shop, just like however much I get done on Pigiron before I die I feel a tinge of pride in that I did everything except the engine machine work with my own two hands. My cat showed symptoms of ADD a few years ago and I knocked him across the room once for it. Cured him slicker than snot and I didn't need to give any doctor a lot of money for drugs that would eventually make him a ward of the state.

Go for it!

if it's any consolation,....you're not alone. Probably half the knuckleheads on this site suffer the same. Projects,....it's easy to buy 'em, it's easy to start 'em and it's a bitch to stay focused and finish 'em!

Lets see if I have that problem, working on 1964 Olds, needs paint and interior, 1930 Desoto, waiting for pistons so the engine can get bored correctly and more to do on that, 1978 Caddy heater controls, transmission, brakes, exhaust,, 1965 Mustang, engine bad, interior chrome and dressup stuff, 1949 Buick, front end sheet metal alignment and axle seals in rear Oh and last but not least, my daily driver, 1948 Plymouth that needs drivers floor, upolstery, paint, engine seals, door panels, OD tranny swap, wireing upgrade. I think that is all, and I am supposed to be retired????

Maybe you could use all that stuff for trading stock to get other stuff to work on one project. Or not.

..Well Booker,If those photos show the storage space you have, looks to me like a beginning ;)

Well, the engine pictures are from the shop that I "share" with my friend...it is actually his...but we are nearly finished with an addition for his farm equipment to make more room for car stuff. Here is a picture with one of his tractors in the shop...it starts getting a little crowded! The picture of the Unibody is from the storage unit of the guy I bought it from...

Well, I have just the thing if I decide to do that...just put this little number out front! A local car dealership opened up at a new location and they were getting rid of the stuff at their old location. I had to buy the lift (in the background, not yet installed) but they were giving pretty much everything else away...the fastener bins (including fasteners) in the right side of the picture, air compressor water traps, etc. We took pretty much everything that was not still bolted down...including this sign that I have no idea what we are going to do with!!!

I am glad that other people suffer from this same thing! It gives me a little validation that I am not completely crazy...

...of course, I forgot to mention the mini bike projects...hell, maybe I am crazy after all :)

I have it also' date=' but my son has it worse than me:)

By the way, what is the car in the photo that shows just the trunk area?[/quote']

That is the 54 Savoy that I have been "trying" to focus my attention on. I am considering doing a build / project thread on it...but I am not sure how interested anyone would be in a mistake riddled project by a complete novice. Not to mention it is a 54 Savoy four door...not the most popular of cars out there (the main reason I like it!!!)...

I'd like to see it. Always nice to see what others are doing. Here's ours: well its actually Dads but a friend and I rebuilt the engine when I was 17 and its the first car I drove after I got my license. I keep trying to talk him out of it but no luck so far.

I like the car! The way I figure is if it is good enough to be Johnny Cash's favorite car then it is good enough for me! I was thinking I should start a thread if only for the fact it will encourage me to take pictures along the way and document what I am doing...which I am notoriously bad about doing.

Here are a couple of full pics of the car. The first pic is the car on one of the first days I got it...and the second was the inaguaral voyage to the Lonestar Roundup a month or so later.

I see you've got powerflite thats awesome. That one only has the standard 3spd no OD even. Dad bought it for $50 from the original family. He was going to give it to the body shop we use because they were restoring a really rotten 53. Well the lady gave up and we ended up getting her 53 for parts. My buddy and I rebuilt the engine and got it driving again. Couple summers later a red squirrel got in it and ate the seats. So Dad and I patched up all the holes in the floor and then he had the seats redone. Other then that we've just been driving it.

Well...I am in the process of replacing the poweflite with a T5...I know, it would be great to get the powerflite working well again but I had a free T5 and like the idea of having a standard with a real overdrive in it for highway cruising. Plus, I don't know of any transmission shop I would trust to rebuild this thing...heck, any transmission for that matter...I think there is a little wizard in auto transmissions that make those things work!

Booker T,

I'd like to see a rebuild thread if you be sure to include every stupid mistake you make so nobody else would (should?) make the same ones.

Ed,

I've been told that one fat squirrel will make a whole pot of gravy. Did you seek revenge?

If its the same one that also took up living in the attic of the shed then yes. Pellet gun took care of that one.

Only three projects here

Work intensely for a couple months and then don't touch them for a couple.

I have been out of town working for the last couple weeks and have not had a chance to work on my car, or get pictures together for a thread. But, I probably have enough stupid mistakes already made for a thread of it's own!

I did learn one very good lesson so far in this project...

If you think it would be a neat idea to polish your intake don't start polishing in a highly visible area. When I got to the point that I realized polishing an aluminum intake is really time consuming, dirty, tedious and totally miserable work, I was just far enough along that I could not stop and had to finish the job!

Kind of like what I learned by tiling a floor...I hate tiling floors!

Dndrodshop: I see a anti-sway bar on the front of the 53/54 Plymouth in the third photo, what does it originally fit. Did you adapt one from another car? If so what car and did you have to modify it to make it work? I am looking at one from a Chevy Astro Van that will require increasing the amount of bend in the outer end to make it align with the front edge of the lower A frame, then have both ends shortened by about 6". I would like to find one that is closer to what is required for the front of the 48-54 Plymouths. We installed an Addaco sway bar on a friends 48 P-15 coupe, it really improved the handling but required adjusting the stops on the spindles to limit travel to prevent the tire from rubbing the bar.

I can relate to wanting to have many projects, and to not let anything go to the scrap heap.

I't kind like those people that take in any stray dog or cat, they just cannot stand to see the poor little critturs hungry or no place to stay warm and sleep.

I have resigned to my 1 current project, which is 95% completed, minus the items that arise out of nowhere. I do own a couple of flathead 6s, and 1 1955 Fargo half ton chassis, it will need a body some day, or I will need another truck to build 1 complete truck.

BTW, my break is over, needed to wind down a bit yesterday. I have now come to the conclusion, that I will ignore, and place those individual(s), on the ignore list, and not be bothered with it anymore......

I stole that car from ND. The woman who had it for sale said is had "some kind of chevy clip on the front".

I paid her asking price. Which was less the cost of the parts on the front end.

It's a complete new Mustang II front suspension with power rack and disc brakes.
