Coffin04 Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Right now my brakes are making a wretched and familiar grinding sound, and i'm thinking I need new liners. Then again it makes it when the wheel spins but the sound doesn't intensify or start when i apply the breaks, it's just there. So i'm going to put down as a need for new liners for now but if any of you have any other ideas throw them in. Till then, where do you gents get your liners from that special time of the decade comes around? Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 When you say liners what are you talking about? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 believe he is making reference to the brake shoes as in the olden days one went to the shop to have them re-lined....just a term from the past.. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Last couple of times my car did that was because one of the brake return springs (that were on the car when I bought it) broke. I got tired of that and completely redid the brakes a couple years ago with parts from Kanter. They're kind of proud of their stuff, but it always works. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 I couldn't find new shoes for my '35 so I sent the old shoes off to http://www.brakeplace.com/ to have them re-lined. They did a great job. Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 mine were doing that too, but that was due to peeling friction material, came off the shoe! Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) Awesome, i really want to take a look into my front drums. Do i need a tool to get the front drums off like the back, or should i be able to just pull it off after retracting the pads with the minor adjustment bolt? Also, in case it is the liner, about how much did that run you Jim? Don, like Tim said, it's just putting new friction material on the shoes called once called liners. Jerry Roberts Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 The term 'brake lining ' is in common use . I have not heard them called "liners " . Quote
Coffin04 Posted January 19, 2011 Author Report Posted January 19, 2011 Honestly i need to adjust them any way. I have way too much travel in the brake pedal. But thanks for the info Shel. Speaking of bearings, i've never pulled out and replaced grease before, which i'm pretty sure i need to do since i know nothing about the owner before me other than some receipts, for some valve and brake work. Any tips? For Jerry: Lining - Liner whichever works for me, but i'll stick with lining if it gets the correct information out. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Also, in case it is the liner, about how much did that run you Jim? It was just under $120 including shipping for all 8 shoes. Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) BTW- what is the part # for 10" car front drums? are they similar to truck? if so, i have NEW replacements for the old drums that come out to $100/pair, if you dont mind slight mods.
