that is a cast number...I have always found the number stamped by hand at the very top of the gear housing on a milled flat area...may take a mirror, good cleaning and a light to see it...the flat is actually on the cast iron hog head that inserts into the metal steeel housing.

Thats where I find them too. Shel look where the other end of your arrow is pointed.

Shel, here's a 50 rear end that Mikemaker and I have been cannibalizing for brake parts. You're looking at the top side of the center. I cleaned this with a scraper and a rag with min spirits. Mine was easy, it's out of the car. Now I know what ratio the gears are, but I was hoping for a 4.10. This rear is out of a 50 buzzcoupe.

Mike, I found the other rear spring. It was right there under our noses.

Nornspeed , Those 3.73 gears that you are disappointed about can be a little hard to find . I'm sure that a lot of the guys on this forum would trade you in a minute for their 4.10 's .

I know this has been beat around before, but let's see if the horse is dead.

My coupe is supposed to have a 373:1 rear.

This is the # I find on the rear.

Is this the right place to look?

Counting the rearend in my coupe, I've had three of them. Two were out of the car. I found the gear ratio stamped on the other side in about the same location as the casting numbers. On those, it was just stamped 3.9. Have never seen a number stamped on any of the tops like the others pictured them.

Norm at one time here on the farm I had 5 of them and all were stamped right on the top on the cast iron hog head..of course, I will admit that I read where to look so did not bother to check if it is on the opposite side. Currently there are but two left on the farm...may have to go out and check the pinion snout to see if it is there also.

YES!!!!!! I'd gladly trade you my 4.10 diff in my truck for that 3.73 diff.

Tim, to be honest, I've never looked at the top for the numbers:confused: . So, they could be there too. I guess they are since someone posted a picture of one. I do know for sure all of my rearends came from P15's though, and of course the one is still in the car.

slipping out the hog head is simple as unbolting the driveshaft, pulling the rear hubs (may be a bit of work) pulling the axles out of the side gears..unbolt the head and remove..would however recommend that you count you splines on the axle..this would be the only concern. The preload, back lash etc etc is not touched.

I've never seen one double stamped like that and I've messed with lots of these. I'll have to double check the 1/2 dozen or so spare diffs in the archives.

Spline count didn't change until 53-54. I have an early 50s 3.90 unit in my 46 pickup that swapped right in. The cases were slightly different in a couple places so I had to use 2 washers on some studs because there weren't quite enough threads on a few studs. Easily fixed if you notice ahead of time but I certainly wasn't pulling the axles and diff back out!

Or just swap the side gears like Dad and I did in my 48 which has a 3.73 in it. Sadly he remembered the spline change a little late after I had the diff already installed and the axles wouldn't go in. That was a frustrating night! Turned out for the best because when we took it apart the 3.73 had bad bearings in it anyways. So I have the 3.73 in my original housing now.

Finally found a number in this are on top of the hog head, it's a number 4, some number is after it, I am assuming the 4 is the first number as when I was looking from the back of the car, with a mirror, the point on the 4 is to the line in the center of this machined area, wish I didn't have a 4.10 or 4.30 in this car, not sure how it ever got in the car. Is there a sure fire method to check the diff ratio, by turning the back tire and counting the driveshaft revolutions. I do have another chrysler here that should have the 354 diff, will just switch the hog heads, if possible............Thanx Fred

IF and again that is an IF..the car was sold in an area where there was a pretty hilly terrrain..more than not the dealership may have requested the car delivered with 4.1 gears so as to not have to explain to a customer why is lugs up hills etc...
