np50dodge Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 After being disassembled for more than 20 years, we got the old engine running this afternoon. We started this project as a puzzle which was disassembled by the previous owner. The engine is rebuilt with all new parts and we disassembled and reassembled just about everything (starter, generator, fuel pump, distributor, carburetor...). So...we anticipated some difficulty. All things considered - the start-up went pretty smoothly. The biggest problem was getting a good ground for the starter!! Once that was resolved, all went well. It sure was nice watching the oil pressure come up, the temp stabilize at 180 and with a little adjustment to the timing and the carb she purred nicely!! The valves are amazingly quiet. Noah can get his driver's permit in about nine months so he is motivated but we have our work cut out for us. Next weekend we start in on reassembling the transmission!! Thanks to those of you who have helped us along the way. We have many more questions to come. Chad & Noah Quote
Merle Coggins Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Lookin' good. I've been there too. You do have a ways to go, but it's a fun journey. Keep us posted. Maybe you'll have it road worthy in time to take his driving test at the DMV. That should blow the instructor's mind. Merle Quote
JBNeal Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 That is great news...hearing that flathead purr like an old tomcat is probably music to y'all's ears. A little tip: the guy at the alternator/starter shop told me to run the ground to one of the starter mounting bolts rather than to the transmission case (as done at the factory). The ground leg for the entire electrical circuit is dependent on a decades-old riveted frame, something I plan to address on my trucks by putting a 1 inch long weld bead at each riveted joint, just to have good ground continuity. greg g Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Funny how that nice shiney new paint doesn't conduct electricity very well.... nice looking set up. Quote
pflaming Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 WOW! Will never forget when mine started, seemed magic. I hope Noah appreciates what he is experiencing. He is one in 10,000 ( the odds may be even bigger) boys doing what he is doing and with his father. Good parenting, I wish you both well. Go to you tube then 'Mopar Dodge Flathead' to see and hear mine start up. We videoed with the cell phone. Do the same, record it for history. Quote
dontknowitall Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Very nice looking set up! Quote
