tim i always wondered what that item was that went around the drum. how does it reduce brake chatter and if you did not put it back on would you get brake problems? always looked like a useless thing to me but i always kept it on. capt den

I have one single experience with the antichatter spring off...Front wheel though)..at the station I worked at while in high school we had sent the drums out to be turned ..when we got them back we installed them..adjusted the brakes etc etc..every test drived showed brakes pulling hard..after many attempt to see what was wrong, the antichatter spring was spotted being missing..it had come off at the machine shop and not put back on..they are a bit of a pain..put it on..car stopped straight and nice..theory is it helps diplace the pressure equally around the drum..if one drum has it and the other doesn't the effective braking is out of balance

I just received two rear drums from Kanter, will be installing tomorrow, I will let all know how they are. Drums only, no hub. they are much beefier than the origional.

I am not an engineer but if that spring cost 50 cents and you build a million cars and could save $1 a car if you left it off. Would it be there?

It was my understanding that it was there to change the harmonics of the drum (which is shaped remarkably like a bell) so that brake noise (squealing, etc.) would be less.
