41/53dodges Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 i picked up this neat old electric p-51 mustang tachometer, figured it would go well in my truck if i can find somewhere to put it. any ideas? i have the late-model B4B cab. heres a pic of the tach, its about 3.5" diameter. Quote
anthonyb Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 How about in the space for the radio speaker on the right side of the dash? I put a home-built clock in there so a tach should fit nicely. Quote
pflaming Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Anthony, I like your dash, got it in my picture folder. To my taste its a nice marriage of the old and the new, yet if someone someday wants it original nothing has been damaged. Nice work. The tach, I would put it where it is easily seen without having to look for it. I like the running guages where I can 'see' them without looking, like the temp and oil gauge. Quote
JBNeal Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 I've seen big trucks with a tach mounted near the center window frame, using the windshield wiper motor mounting screws to also be used on a sheet metal bracket...the tach is purt'near right up on the glass cuz any closer to the steering wheel and it'd be clipped by yer knuckles. 41/53dodges Posted October 12, 2010 Author Report Posted October 12, 2010 well, its supposed to be flush-mounted in something, so im debating whether or not to put it in the dash and where? Quote

So that means it is set up to run a 12 cylinder rolls royce merlin engine, I don't think you will get any accurate readings. Quote
41/53dodges Posted October 12, 2010 Author Report Posted October 12, 2010 no, the way this one is set, it was supposed to have an external points frequency to voltage converter, which i did not get. i did on the other hand map out the voltage to RPM ratio and wiring diagram of the tach, and built a circuit to run it, so it actually does work, and so far it works properly with bench testing. i will hopefully move on to true truck testing today. 41/53dodges Posted November 10, 2010 Author Report Posted November 10, 2010 still gotta figure out where to put it Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) This same type of tach is mounted on the dash. In a 2-1/2 tonner. Has a factory cupped mount plate attached to back of the tach with a bolt. 2 screws through the base into dash. Transmitter is a Sun. 1 D cell battery powers it. 41/53dodges Posted November 10, 2010 Author Report Posted November 10, 2010 (edited) is that yours? if so, could you get some better pics of how that is bracketed? BTW: my dash has the "hats" protruding for the speedo and speaker, so that could be a slight issue. Edited November 11, 2010 by 41/53dodges Quote
