TodFitch Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Has anyone put a car alarm on there 6 volt system. No one in oklahoma will touch my car since its not a 12 volt. I know of at least one person (not me) who leaves his old Plymouth unlocked with the keys in the ignition. He figures that no one would know how to start it what with the choke control and foot starter pedal... Maybe his car will be stolen someday but he has been lucky for quite a few years now. Maybe antique auto theft is more of a problem in Oklahoma than in California. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 (edited) A car alarm would be a good thing, if you can ultimately engineer one. It would seem there should be some way to hook up the horns so they honk if the power is turned back on. However, probably nothing would be good if they winch it onto a flatbed rollback truck. Unless you can figure how to make a contact affected by movement of a wheel, regardless of the igniton being on. If you read the HAMB, there have been several hotrod and custom cars stolen in Calif, Texas and Arizona in the past year or two. Some from shops, some from motel/hotel parking lots, and some from right in front of the owner's residence. None have been recovered so far, even tho the forum members spread the word pretty quickly over a wide area. One guy, a while back, received a tip and found his car in a shipping container or some such and took it back. Just lately, a member saw a truck stolen a day or two before at a license office.....recognized it even tho the thieves had messed up the paint to disguise it. That was recovered. But those things have been few. Edited September 8, 2010 by BobT-47P15 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 I installed a 6 volt alarm in my 1951 Plymouth back in 1969 and it worked -saved my Panasonic deck and my Doors/Steppanwolf and Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida 8 track tapes! Still have the car and the 8 track deck too. Life is good! Bob Quote
Young Ed Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 My 51 plymouth has/had a homemade car alarm. There is a key switch next to the trunk opening. You have to turn that key to arm/disarm it. That key activated a system of extra horns under the hood and door switches. Wouldnt work if someone broke a window and did the duke boys trick but otherwise it would make some noise! Quote
fedoragent Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Today I had my horn hooked up and was surprised at how LOUD just one of them gets. The other one is non operational but I have found that one is particularly good enough. Those horns are so loud it would be great to be able to get them to honk incessantly in case of break in. Everybody and their mother would know that someone is trying to steal the car. Those horns can wake up the dead! FG. Quote
PatS.... Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 A buddy hooked up a couple of very loud horns under the front seat. If you didn't turn them off before the door opened it would deafen anyone INSIDE the car. It was an old 52 Chevy 6 volt. Quote
