Guest dylans1952 Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 I need to replace my timing chain and I am going to need to replace the gears also. how can I put the crank gear back on? I looked it up on google and one guy said to heat the gear to 500 degrees and just slide it on. I am not sure if this would work and sounds like a good way to burn your hands. another guy says just to beat it on with a large hammer. this sounds bad. and I thought about trying to push it on with a bolt threaded into the crank and a nut on it pushing a peice of pipe pushing the gear because the crankshaft sticks out beyond the gear substantialy this will require several lengths of pipe and I will have to wedge a peice of wood in the flywheel to hold it still. I am 16 and this 1952 dodge is my first vehicle and the timing chain is all that is keeping me from starting it after weeks of work. so I need help this engine could use some oil moveing though it. Merle Coggins Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 As I recall, the gear (sprocket) should slide right onto the crankshaft with very little resistance. There should be no need to press or hammer anything. Merle Quote

greg g Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 and if I recall the bolt holes are slightly eccentric and only align one way. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 As has been mentioned quit talking to the heat man and the hammer man. The gear is "keyed" to the crankshaft and is a slip fit. Make sure your timing marks are aligned. Quote
Andydodge Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 Dylan, welcome to the forum from Australia, nice to see someone getting a start on mopars, have you got a workshop or service manual?.........as Don mentioned the crank gear should just slip on, the important thing is to get the timing marks aligned..........is the engine still in the car? also have you removed the chain/gears yet?..............andyd Quote
Guest dylans1952 Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 Thanks for the replies they are very helpful I have the chain off and the cam gear too I first got just the chain but it was so tight and I could not get it on but I noticed that the chain did not fit into the teeth of the gears completely and after reading on this forum I learned that I should replace the gears too. so they are on the way. I have a shop manual but it is more or less specific. the motor is still in the truck but by now I wish I had pulled it. I didn't because my "shop" is my dads wood shop so I am limited on space. after I get the chain and the radiator back in I am going to start it before I move on to seeing why the #6 cylinder blackens spark plugs after about three minutes Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 Crank gears are tough to get off-you need a puller. Replacement after market chains won't fit on factory MoPar (DPCD) crank and cam gears in most cases. Correct way is to replace both cam and crank gears and chain as a matched set. Bob Quote
