I got a quote from Grundy for my B-2-C, and it was a great rate, but they later sent me an email and said that without a enclosed lockable garage to store my truck that they can't insure it. Is there another company that insures these older vehicles?

JC Taylor, Congdon and Scully, Haggerty

They all might have the same policy about being kept in a garage.

I know that I have Grundy and they do not care how many miles I put on my 39 Desoto. I do know that I can not drive it to work and it is only to be driven for some pleasure driving and to club events, tours, parades and shows.

Haggerty has the same garage policy. They told me that they needed a picture of my 1ton in the garage before a policy would be issued. Usage and mileage restrictions as well, like for parades and shows only. Went for liability only from Liberty mutual instead. Told them 500 miles a year and no other restrictions. About $400 a year, but in IL you need proof of insurance to get your annual plate sticker for another $100. The price we pay.

Here is another option, Could you rent a garage and or have a portable shed built that has a garage door on it and then store the truck inthe shed?

Do you have the property to do this or know someone that has a empty garage space?

i have my 39 Desoto insured with Grundy for 15K and this costs me around $120 for the year with no milege limitations. The extra cost of the garge might be worth it if you can arrnage for a locked facility.

Grundy said the shed needs to be permanent, but it isn't an option in any event, I just don't have the money to build something. The quote they gave me with no mileage restrickton was about $68 per year. Danged anyway, I know it will cost more elsewhere.

I plan on using collector plates which for me means a one time fee for plates and can't be driven in Jan or Feb, and must own another regularily licensed vehicle. liability ins only so I can drive whenever, wherever I want. Never planned on driving it in the snow anyway.

collector plates in ca aren't a good idea aren't a good idea for me. I looked at it, but DMV said I could only drive in parades etc and the truck had to be hauled between sites. All of this insurance and registration stuff takes some of the fun out of these old beasts :)

Anything over so many years old here qualifies for collector. We also have available "Antique" plates, again a one-time cost, less than "collector", but much more restrictive, very similar to your CA plates. Works well for those who only do parades and shows but not for those who want to take that spontanious cruise to wherever the urge takes them.

I have mine with a couple companies now. I was at the Back to the 50's car show last week and got a bunch of quotes. Grundy was the best, I won't go into all the ins and outs, but for your truck, here's another option.

Gulfway, http://www.racensur.com/ covers my old truck. $180 a year for a $1500 value. The advantages are three. No garaging needed, no mileage limits and you are covered pulling a trailer, unlike all the others. You do have to show coverage on another daily driver, as do the others.

Hagerty, Grundy and I think most of the rest require a garage, they do not. Most of the others require at least a $5000 value, they do not. A bit more expensive, but it might get you where you want to go.

By the way, collector insurance and antique tags are two different subjects. I get the idea from some posts that some people think it's both or neither.

There must be an insurance company out there that will insure anything for any value provided that it is kept in an underground vault able to withstand a 100 megaton nuclear blast, provided that the grounds are surrounded by a 16 foot high razor wire fence, with a laser detection motion sensor and web cam operated machine gun turrets. Would'ya think.

Yup but not if you drive it off the reservatioin.

Try American Collectors. I have had them for about 10 years, they do require you to have another vehicle for daily use, not sure about the garage thing, haven't looked in a long time.

Illinois antique plates are $25 for 5 years. Only supposed to drive for car shows, parade or maintenance. I drive mine 4 or 5 times a week so it's not enforced that much maybe if you had an accident or something. I have antique insurance with my regilar carrior. Has to be kept in garage and mileage according to license but agent said it's no big deal always covered when driving.

Once mine is finished, it probably won't see much garage time. I have a space under my deck that I can put it with a cover for some weather protection but it's open and accessible for the most part. Mileage and storage won't affect me much with a standard liability policy but I'll have to look at other types of coverage when it gets drivable.

I have mine insured with American Collectors

We agreed on a value, and I agreed to stay under 3000 miles a year.

At renewal time they ask for the odometer reading. It is not a problem to keep it under that limit and I also have Minnesota Year of Manufacture Plates on it which is a one time fee. They also have restrictions in that I have another vehicle licensed and insured, and that I just drive to shows. I'm always showing my truck to someone so I use it as a driver during the summer.

For now I just added it to my State Farm policy. $16 a month is more than I wanted to pay, but it will work for now as I search other possibilities including the ones offered in this thread. Thanks

I've had a few Grundy Policy's for last 20 years. Have also used Hagerty and a few others, Grundy is the best for my money. I have had to file a few claims as well and they have been great. Never any problems. have a buddy with a garage? ;)
