Getting parts from the US. A little OT maybe?

My boss & I are planning on getting some parts shipped over from the states. He has a 37 Hudson & I have a 54 Aussie Dodge. Mainly smaller engine & suspension parts. Is there any places that will store items and then ship at your request? Our plan is to get parts (from all over the place most probably) and get them shipped to a central location, and then when everything has been purchased ship it to us.

that's how we do it: everybody gets his orders sent to a certain adress

a friend is at on holiday in the US, and he gathers it, stuffs it into a container

and ships it over here.

that way we can devide the freight and have someone look at all the parts if they're correct and intact.

I meant a car enthusist that was retired from their regular job, Fred, not from messing with cars, as I'd have to agree, that seldom happens.

I could be a little more enthusiastic about taking on anything else if I was retired from making a living. I sure wouldn't mind taking this on, if I had the time, as it would be interesting, of service to others, and make a guy a fairly easy buck. Joel

I have shipped packages all over the globe as a result of my eBay sales. I can help you out if needed as long as the final package isn't too big or cumbersome to package and ship via USPS and you have a PayPal account.

Reg, that's kind of you to offer. I didn't want to ask as I thought it might be rude and imposing. We're looking at gasket sets, water pumps, maybe an engine rebuild kit (for the Hudson L6) and some suspension & other engine parts. It will probably end up being 20 kilograms or so, which is probably too heavy for the postie. We're kind of thinking box it up in a small carton or 2 and put it on a ship. There are guys here that import cars, and some will apparently do parts, but they rather do whole cars from what I understand.

Joel, I too think it would be interesting as the purchaser would do all their own buying (or buying done for a small fee) and have the parts delivered to an address. I think there is a real niche market for this.

i know;)couldn't help it.

louie, how about this:

get to know those car importing guys a little better and ask them to stuff your parts into the trunk of one.

i did this with my tires and they didn't charge anything for it but a case of beer.

also i wouldn't want a lonesome box standing around on of these freighters,

guess they steal everything that isn't up on the tree by the count of three...

Just for fun.......Send me your shipping address and I'll go to my USPS account and see what a ~24"x30"x18" box weighing 20 kilograms ( 44 lbs ) would cost to ship to you.

You need a freight consolidator. It tends to be a rather complicated job because of all of the freight regulations associated with overseas shipments and container shipping requirements. NOT a job for a novice!!

I have often thought that doing something like this would ultimately save on shipping costs for us OZ guys, but like you I don't know anyone in the US.

I'm constantly looking at parts on eBay etc for my cars, but the shipping can be a killer, although its much more reasonable than shipping out of OZ (they must use gold-plated aeroplanes to post from OZ by the way Australia Post charges!).

For what its worth, if you do manage to organise someone as a central 'depot', I'd be interested in such a service and would share in the costs if it ends up being more economical for us all. Perhaps some of the other OZ guys may too?

Marty...what one man can do, another can too. I would think someone with shipping and recieving experience should be able to handle it on the relitively small scale they are talking about. Joel

I've done this for guys in Australia, Germany, Holland, Finland etc. over the years. If you want to contact me offline at olddaddy@rustyhope.com I'll be glad to help you out. You can ship your stuff to me at my shop and when you're ready I will ship it on to you. I've had very good luck with USPS mail deliveries on smaller items. The biggest thing I've shipped so far was a T-5 transmission to a fella in Australia.

Louie, I've brought it gasket sets, suspension parts, engine parts, an edgy finned head, intake manifolds, carbys, Fulton Sun Visor, etc etc.......since the late 1980's.........under no circumstances use Fed Ex, UPS or similar....only the US Post Office, they have a website & you can get a rough idea from there yourself.........personally heavy things can get quite expensive as now personal imports like what your contemplating only go via airmail, there being no surface mail now.........if you want more info give me a call, am home from 5.30 pm NSW time.......02 66 425963 or call me at my shop, Scale Automobilia on 02 66 435260 from 8am -5pm.........Andy Douglas

Maybe so; I was going on my wife's experience consolidating container loads to Hawaii. As long as you stick to strictly metal parts with nothing that can burn, be an oxidizer, and no liquids of any kind it is fairly straight forward. Anything beyond that is subject to a bewildering set of regulations concerning what can and can't be shipped together, and the fines for non-compliance are eye-watering.

I won't even get into export licensing for new products, the lack of which can get you fined as well!
