BobT-47P15 Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 My P15 dual trumpet horns have a relay (still 6 V). In addition, I have an oogah horn, a siren, and an older model "beep, beep" horn on the car......each single item.....none has a relay and they work fine. However, now I wonder if adding a relay would make that ol siren wail better?? Maybe when I get in the mood, I'll grab a spare relay and hook it in. Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 Back in high school when I owned my first P-15 I installed 4-5 different horns in the car. I did not use a relay on any of them except the original pair of trumpets. I used to toot my own horn (horn's) a lot in those days:D Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 I would suspect that you had a wolf whistle installed on that ride too. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 12, 2010 Report Posted June 12, 2010 Back in the day when Don was young he had lung capacity to do his own wolf whistle..now with him being an old geezer...am sure he has a mechanical one installed..sorry don..momma raised me to tell the truth.. Quote

But if you just want to do a quick and easy test for loudness , attach a heavy wire to your best power source and touch the terminal on your siren with the other end and listen . Quote
insaneradio Posted June 12, 2010 Report Posted June 12, 2010 A simple answer is yes, install it. There is nothing to to gain by not having one. They are simple to install and it will prevent you from overloading the wires to your horn ring on your column. A wire which has too much current flowing through it can melt insulation or burn cloth wiring. It is simple piece of mind. Dave Quote
BeBop138 Posted June 13, 2010 Report Posted June 13, 2010 Rich, Thanks for the info. It's good to have. BTW......my P-12 has dual trumpets. They're so loud it scares the crap outta people.Tom I have the 6V dual horns in my Chrysler and run 12V thru them---it does make people jump:D Quote
fedoragent Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 Does anyone know where to get a new horn relay? I think mine is bad. I have converted to 12V, and only one of my horns work. I fear that the relay may be bofunct. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 If your relay was defunct both horns wound't work. However, if you want to try one, 12 volt horn relays are readily availabe at most auto parts stores. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) any of the little square relays with associated pigtail from about any car in the junkyard will do the trick..these are small and yet very reliable, most are rated at 30 Amps and you can get them up through 40 amps..(each will be marked) they also come in NO and NC contact connections for toggle action..if you don't ned a NC connection..just don't worry about it..break off the blade of the relay or tape the assocaited wire.. I snag these off any and all cars that come through me..I have folks give me used up cars as they know I will recycle the parts for use on my old cars..I bet I have at least 12 relays of this sort on the 41 Dodge alone..door latch solenoids, door lock, door unlock that is 4 right there, fan relay, horn relay, headlight, trunk electric latch relay..list goes on..these things are fantastic and small enough to hide about anywhere..
