p24-1953
so how can you determine your rpm without a tach. could you count the flashes of the timming light, and multiply? where can we get a 6 volt positve ground tach these days? Plymouthy Adams
you can buy a hand help tach that that is mechanical and will indiate the true speed by holding it center of the shaft on the driving/driven device...I used to use these extenisvely many years ago on another job I had..only other true indicator could be a calibrated strobe light..these are dead on devices and will work on any rotating device as it isijust point and shoot..other indicator of speed are reed vibrators that will show your speed..do not think these are dead accurae but will get you pretty much ball parked..next to an automotive tach e;lectrical/mechanical cable driven..these are about the only choices out there.. Don Coatney
Here is what looks like a good choice for $21.25. I do not own one of these nor have I tried one. But for twenty one bucks it looks like it would be worth a try. With a bit more googling you might find one cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photo-Laser-Tachometer-Contact/dp/B001N4QY66
Merle Coggins
I got my tach/dwell meter on ebay for around $16 and free shipping. Go to ebay and type "dwell meter" into the search field and see what you get. This one looks to be a fairly good deal with reasonable shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dwell-Tach-tester-Meter-Model-R-11-4-6-8-cylinders-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2c548a926eQQitemZ190396928622QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools
Cpt.Fred
so there aren't any nice bolt-in-tachometers for these cars on the market? since i want one for safety, too, maybe i'll try converting a 12v unit, that should be possible somehow. must have the correct look though, because there can't be any modern stuff (visible) in the car... I have a vintage 6 volt Sun tachometer in my car. I found it on eBay. It uses a transmitter that is mounted in my engine compartment. You just have to find a 6 cylinder, 6 volt transmitter because they also were made for 8 cylinders and also 12 volts. Jim Yergin
Cpt.Fred
yet another item to add to my ebay list...
Reg Evans
Here's a 6 volt tach I have. Can't remember where I got it right now but they are available. Try http://www.tachshack.com/
Captain Neon
I read some where that using a 12v converter for power and then connecting the read to the engine as prescribed will work with a modern tachometer on a 6v car.
