Young Ed Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 In preperation for the trip in a month I figured it was a good idea to get both outside door locks working. Prior to that I was locking the pass side from the inside and locking the drivers from the outside. The pass side lock retaining screw is messed up so I rigged an alternative and got the lock to work. Its been working for about two weeks. Last night the rotor piece of the latch was kinda sticking and my handle wasn't springing back up. Got out the oil can and heard it pop loose and the door shuts nicely again. Only now it won't lock. From the inside with the handle or with the key. Any ideas what to check on? I'm hoping someone has been there done that on this one.... Quote
55 Fargo Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 I have the same problem with my paasnger side door. I cannot lock it with th key, or from inside, something is worn. The screw that holds the lock cylinder in position has the head rounded right off, tried drilling it out, but so no luck, gave up last summer. Need to buy some Cobalt bits and drill it out.......Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted April 29, 2010 Author Report Posted April 29, 2010 I got mine drilled out and then the tap broke in the hole. Quote
48ply1stcar Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 The guy who painted my car tried to drill out my retaining screw. If he would had asked me I would have told him that the handles are held in place by very small set screws. I would tell you what size hex wrench to use, but I just got a new hip on monday and I'm pretty much confined to a recliner. Quote
bobjob55 Posted May 1, 2010 Report Posted May 1, 2010 you guys ever try a left handed drill ??? it might work for you ... I have been using them for over 25 years on tractors ,,, and they work great most of the time ... if you use one smaller than root of threads ,, the screw usually backs out .. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 1, 2010 Report Posted May 1, 2010 I had the same problem trying to remove the set screws for the lock cyl. So now I don't even have locks...just put a chrome cap in the holes. I figure if they want in to a convertible, they'll just cut the top...so I'm making it easy for anyone who wants in. If staying overnight somewhere, just take everything into the room. Quote
greg g Posted May 1, 2010 Report Posted May 1, 2010 Can't lock mine either, the ignition was changed to a later one with a start position and the key was not in the package. So no can lock the doors or the truk as never had that key. I can carry my car cover and cable it but I don't think that would deter any one who really wanted in. Since these cars are so easy to hot wire, if I were really concerned about parking it over night some where, I would probably remove the battery. But the thief with a tow truck woud get right past that woudn't they??? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 I can lock my trunk, but would still not leave much in it overnight. I have a battery cutoff switch under the dash, which might deter some thieves, but sure wouldn't do any good in case of a rollback truck. There have been several reports of stolen cars over on the Hamb. Quote
