fdwrench Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 I am tearing down a 1960 230 for overhaul. The oil pressure regulator piston is stuck. I have soaked it for two days in penetrant but it wont budge. Any suggestions? Ed Quote
randroid Posted January 2, 2010 Report Posted January 2, 2010 fdwrench, Welcome to the forum; I hope I'll be able to live up to a little of the accolades we bestow upon ourselves. So much for modesty, there's a bunch of knowledge here but what I'm going to suggest is rather off-the-wall but my manual is in my '48 P-15, which is, in turn, under more snow than I want to dig through to find the right answer. So here is an educated guess; The pressure relief valve is a piston being held in place by spring tension, and with that in mind start sniffing around for the place that piston and spring were slipped inside the block. There must be one and the piston will likely be able to be pulled with a tappet puller, and those don't cost much. Shouldn't be difficult to do. -Randy Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted January 2, 2010 Report Posted January 2, 2010 Do you have the spring in your hand? or on your work bench? I would use some bb blaster and let it soak. I was in a hurry and put mine in backwards, boy what a problem that was. I finally got a magnet and pull it out that way. Maybe an easy out might just do the trick for you. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 2, 2010 Report Posted January 2, 2010 If you crank on it, will the oil pressure pop it out? Quote
fdwrench Posted January 2, 2010 Author Report Posted January 2, 2010 Got it. I use a long easy out. At a point that I was worrying about breaking the easy out it started to free up. Thank you for the help. Ed Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted January 2, 2010 Report Posted January 2, 2010 I am tearing down a 1960 230 for overhaul. ???? I thought '59 was the last year of the flathead six???? Quote
fdwrench Posted January 2, 2010 Author Report Posted January 2, 2010 According to the number on the engine TP23 it came from a 1960 Dodge truck Quote
TodFitch Posted January 2, 2010 Report Posted January 2, 2010 ???? I thought '59 was the last year of the flathead six???? 1959 would be the last year the L-6 was used in a passenger car. The 1966 Dodge truck factory service manual that I had when I had my 1963 D200 showed the L-6 engine as used in at least one of the WM series (military I think) trucks. Quote
james curl Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 Vintage power wagon should be able to tell you when the Army bought their last 3/4 ton. It was made by Dodge and we were still using them in the National Guard in the mid 60s. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 3, 2010 Report Posted January 3, 2010 And 1960 civilian trucks still came with the flathead. I believe you could also get the new /6 that year and of course a v8. Quote
