Durn Frosty Morning In These Parts OT

Hey all, it is -18 f or -28 C here at my place this morning with the windchill about -35.

There is almost no snow here, which makes it colder and reeks havoc wioth water mains, sewer lines, septic fields etc.

We are very lucky, they were predicting -31 f or -35 c, and a windchill of -44 overnight.

It is only going to get up to about -6 f today, no break till Wedneday, when it will maybe go up to about 10 to 12 f.

Winter in the north can be hard, North Dakota and Northern Montana and North Minnesota, are all experiencing very cold temps this morning.

The good news is this, by next week, temps are supposed to rise, to 30s.....Fred PS just went out to my super insulated garage, which is detached from the house, it is insulated with R20 walls, and R40 attic.

The temp is 25 in there, with no heat on, that is 45 degrees difference from outside, which is good, if I put the heaters on it would be toasty in a no time.

just what is a negative temperature..sure anyone can make a reference to a zero point..but I say that it is all relative..and relative to me is a winter temp of about 40 degrees as a low...as it is wet and rainy, temp of 33 and a slight wind the actual "sensed" temperature for me is -7 degrees with a windchill effect at -11 plus on top of that we have had rain for more than 24 hours and yet it still is raining big time...

last thing I need is a weather man...I mean we have them, but it still rains when I don't want it too..he's worthless..we still get what mother nature has in store for us..

I know and the rain is surely appreciated...when it prevents me from doing one thing, trust me there is lots of other stuff to do about the place. I think the state has emerged from the drought status now as Lake Lanier is at capacity.. I took advantage of the lower temps and was working some panels with acid yesterday..good day for it as the evaporation process is super slow so the acid gets to do it work better..

Fred, we are enjoying nearly identical temperatures in southern Alberta. Only difference is we have lots of snow on the ground. Blizzard last weekend and steady snow the last couple of days. It has quit now but we may be getting more. We are supposed to warm up Tuesday to around freezing and them I guess it is moving east to you by Wednesday. Stay warm!!!

What is weather? "It's something that everyone loves to talk and complain about, but no one does anything about it."

And Tim, what is a negative temperature?

"It's a very cold temperature. "It really doesn't matter how many degrees it is when it's a negative temperature. It's just plain cold and time to hibernate.":D If you do go out, minus 10 feels just as cold as minus 50, so it really doesn't matter how cold it is then. Again, it's just plain cold.

I've found that not thinking about how cold it is, it doesn't feel as cold.

Norm, ain't this the truth, weather love or not, we spend a lot of our lives discussing it,hatin it, aor waitin for it to get better.

Let me tell you Southern Boys about what -35 to -40 feels like, I find you can breath nicely to about -25, then it gets tougher as it gets colder, ice crytals form from your breath, the oxygen gets very crisp going in.

Your clothing gets the crinkly sounds, walikng on snow sounds different than in warmer temps. Long story short, this kind of weather is not fun, and can be downright dangerous, if you break down on the highway at night, or in some remote area. Lots of homeless people die in this weather, if they don't make it to the shelters.

Tim, negative temps, are exactly that, negative, not comfortable like positive temps, this weather does seperate the skittish from the non-skittish, but the roads, freeways, city streets will be packed Monday morning for the rush.

Last Friday we took our 2 kids to Disneys,Playhouse show, at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, it was not super cold, it was about 5 above f. We parked under ground at the main Winnipeg Public Library, took an elevator up 2 floors, then went to the arena Via skywalks, through 2 downtown malls, it was very pleasant.

I did feel sorry for the Disney crew, as they are from somehwere in the US, and it must have been a shock to there systems to come here on a Cold Decemeber day. Portage and Main, 15 below, ohhhhh yahhhhh

current "weather" of minus 11 and day before -2 and 50MPH winds driving it into your nether regions,,,made me do it,,,,

I spent a couple hours looking around Key West Florida on Craigs list for ideas of 'something' to do down there to support me while being there

I vacationed last winter there and LOVED it,,,but looks like an expensive place to visit long term.

"Somebody" has to have some ideas of what a fat old retired guy can do to make some money,,,,legally!!! What do snow birds need and desire,,,worse than money???

I am listening,,dont eveerybody talk at once!!!:D

I remember being in Moncton, NS, CA. years ago at the hotel that had an indoor park. Snow blowing horizontal all week I was there. Tried to walk across the parking lot to the mall and got as far as the gas station halfway and after 20 minutes thawing out walked back to the hotel. Went to the book store that was attached to the park and bought a book to read for 3 days. That and sat in the resteraunt bar and nursed a beer afternoons. Was real happy when day came to fly back home. FYI,, park had rides, games and even a roller coast inside. hotel, book store, restarant all around the play area. Only time got that cold again was in Pontiac, MI doing a show in January for Chrysler the year (2001?) they got back into racing.

That be Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Lots of major snow and damp cold on the north Atlantic coastal provinces, worse than here IMHO, but we get colder, but usually less snow, and great summers.

I have been outside a few times today, mostly going out to the garage, itis windy and super cold, but very sunny, at least......

Actually, any time it gets to 5 or 10 degrees above here it's not all that bad. Just a nice winters day then. But.......as Fred said, when it's below zero it can get bad, especially when it gets that cold and windy. You see people wearing face masks when it gets that cold. However, I can't wear anything over my nose and mouth when it's that cold. The steam from your breath gets on the mask and turns it to ice almost instantly. I think those things make you colder instead of keeping you warmer.

Rockwood, Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.. My only defense is having a "brain fart" moment. Seem to get those a lot more these days. Must be getting old and should write things down and make sure they make sense before putting them into a post. :o

I was laughing pretty good too when I started reading your post. Actually, a lot of retired people do that here in Wisconsin too. They usually buy a time share condo and hit Florida for a month or three every winter. Personally, I'd rather stay here and rough it out for the winter. It's not all that bad. Worse part about winter in my opinion is the daylight hours are too short. I think that's the part I dislike about winter the most. Going to a warm climate isn't going to change that.

Don, do what one of my neighbors do to make some money legally while in Florida. Every year he heads for Florida right after the first of the year and stays there until about the end of March. His van is packed to top with old flea market stuff. He sells that while down there at the flea markets. He also buys more stuff while down there and hauls it back here. Then he hits the flea markets up here and sells stuff. So.........he makes his money in both places.

I am thinking of getting a job as a weatherman when I retire. I think I would be better than most.

"It is cold, real cold, dam cold, real dam cold, might snow, might snow a lot, might not snow a lot, warming trend in 6 months then it will be hot, real hot, dam hot, real dam hot, might rain, might not rain, 50% chance it will rain, if you are outdoors for 20 minutes you might get rain for ten minutes, or you might not get any rain, but if it were cold you might get snow for ten of the twenty minutes if the chance of snow is 50%."
