paulmusiclover Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 Does anyone know if it is possible to buy an after-market side mount radio that works for the D-24? I've seen one for a Corvette, but I'm unsure if it would fit in this application... My AM radio powers up , but does not play anything (guessing the tubes are shot) - and honestly, I'm looking to play an MP3 player through it anyway, so ideally, finding something that fits and looks reasonably good would be great. Plymouthy Adams Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 there are a number of companies out there that will upgrade and modernize your stock radio for todays gadgets and devices keeping the original looks complete....is this what you are referring to? Quote
paulmusiclover Posted August 24, 2009 Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 Actually, I was referring to replacing it altogether with something more modern - though I'm open to something like that too if there isn't another alternative. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 personally I think the dash of the D24 is by far one of the prettiest arrangement of the decade...the radio is very well placed and looks good..the upgrade of the original retains the entire exterior looks but with modern guts...there will be inputs for all you newer devices..however if you are staying stock at 6 volt this may not be possible..if you are 12 or going to 12 volt, changing to negative ground the radio is the only device that really is affected outside of swapping leads on the ampmeter...this era of vehicle did not have pernament magnet motors so polarity is not to be concerned with. Sow if 12 neg ground, the upgrade would more than not be just the ticket.. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 Paul, You can check with this guy. I have seen his work and it looks great. Dennis:cool: http://www.bobsradio.com/#AM_FM Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 You can get a 6 to 12 volt power inverter that you could use to run just the radio as 12V. Leave rest of car 6V. I'm planning on getting one, and look for a late model player to maybe stash under the front seat or back below the dash. Haven't quite figured it out yet. Something else to play with. I think blueskies (Pete) had one of those conversions done, and can hook various new devices to play thru his system. Often, the tubes in the old radios are still OK, but the capacitors have worn out due to age. If it hums, the vibrator is probably still good. Quote
Young Ed Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 Here you go. These guys will even convert it to still work on 6v. Not cheap though. I have personally been in their shop. They repaired the factory am-fm for dads 69 sport fury vert. If you got the $ these are the guys. http://www.turnswitch.com/radio1.htm Quote
Captain Neon Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 Found an 802 that was but a shell of its former self and had the guys at http://www.turnswitch.com install new updtaed guts. Looks and works great. They even installed a 6-12 converter in the case so that I only needed to hook it up stock. They even provided a 12 v lead that I use to run my GPS or charge my cell phone if I want to. Quote
windsor8 Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 I wanted to retain the beautiful D-24 dash so I mounted my radio under the dash and it is pretty well blends in and is out of the way. Quote
busycoupe Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 I have a 6v pos. ground to 12v neg ground converter and a new Sony radio/cd/mp3 player. The new radio fit into the glovebox of my D24 with only a small hole cut into the back of the glovebox for wires. I use a small, 3 inch long, powered antenna which sticks to the inside of the windshield behind the rear view mirror. The speaker is a dual cone stereo speaker that fits behind speaker grill in the center of the dashboard. The dash is untouched, the old radio is still in place for looks. The whole set-up cost about $200. The only down side is that I have to open the glovebox to adust the radio, or insert a CD. This is not a problem for me, but something to consider. I bought the converter, speaker, and antenna from this site: http://www.soundmove.com/index.htm The radio came from Best Buy. Not a bad solution. Quote
realgonekatt Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Sounds like the way to fly. $200 is hard to beat and you still keep that perty AM static box in the dash.
