55 Fargo Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 I was opening my hood yesterday, snapped off the last 5 inch off the cable near the latch. I was able to still attach whats left and it still works, just barely. Any idea if this cable can be repaired, if a new wire can be installed in the steel sleeve? Part of the problem is I open the hood often, like everythime I go for a ride, as my battery master switch is battery pole type, need to switch to one under the dash, but will need more heavey 2/0 cable.....Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Fred I tried to repair mine after I burnt it in two. (forgot to unplug the horns from power after unhooking the horns themselves-wires fell on cable and burnt it off) I didn't have any luck getting 2 wires to join together. Now if you have an intact wire you can install it in the sleeve I did that with that one before I burnt it. Now I have a heavy duty cable from napa with a small chrome handle. I think its a PTO cable. Quote

Young Ed Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Mine doesn't say hood on it but this one certainly looks like it would work. I have a receipt for mine at home and can get you the actual number. http://www.napaonline.com/NOLPPSE/(S(03ymbs55u1ncwcihinzb2jvg))/Detail.aspx?R=BK_7311116_0244752630 I think this is the one I have http://www.napaonline.com/NOLPPSE/(S(03ymbs55u1ncwcihinzb2jvg))/Detail.aspx?R=BK_7311106_0244765438 Quote

Young Ed Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Fred either one would work I think. Check the length of your old one. I think I ended up cutting that 9ft one almost in 1/2. Of course your Chrysler may be a little longer. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Ed..I saw one of those on the wall at the Napa uptown..for the money..hard to go wrong..I am amazed at the life the original cable and knobs...by design they appear very lightweight..but the test of time has proved them very adequate...do keep these cables lubed along with the latch..they are a mother bear when they break.. JIPJOBXX Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 Here's an idea just get a couple of cabel clamps and make up a short section of cabel and splice them together. Doesn't cost an arm and a leg and should work. I have used cable clamps befor and if you crimp them tight enough at your connection it should last till the cows come home. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 ...do keep these cables lubed along with the latch..they are a mother bear when they break.. Tim, What do recommend to use to lube the cable? Thanks. Jim Yergin Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 just about any light oil will work..10W or so...if you were to place a cotton ball on the end and fix it in place with a wire tie from a bread bag..you cans saturate the cotton and over time it will capilate into the short hood cables as found on the Dodge..for the Plymouth and longer cable..you can actually disconnect and flex the cable housing while oiling to get it lube up very nicely..very much like oiling a motorcyle control cable, you can actually make a nice funel and tape around the end and fill with oil while holding it higher than the handle in the car..gravity will take over and help oil process Quote
PatS.... Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 I think on a cable inside a cover like that, I would use graphite so it wouldn't get all gummed up. Quote
