DigmyP18 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Found old page from New York Daily News in the trunk of my 49 P-18. Here's a few of the highlights: The Bambino Lugs bat and ball to Nova Scotia. The Bambino is going to don spikes and flannels and take one more good swing at the ball just to please the baseball fans of Nova Scotia. The Bambino and his wife and daughter sailed for Westville, Nova Scotia aboard the Arcadia to be the house guest of dr. G.A. Lyall-Irwin during the salmon run. When the Nova Scotians learned the King of Swat would soon be in their midst they deluged Dr. Lyall-Irwin with letters begging that Ruth appear in an exhibition game. The doctor prevailed upon Ruth to comply. The game between the two Nova Scotia teams will be played soon after ruth's arrival. Olympic Flag gets Airing in L.A. (Los Angeles, July 3 U.P) The official Olympic flag was removed today from it's heavy metal case in which it was encased four years ago and examined for signs of damage. Two Tinsmiths worked an hour getting the flag from it's mothproof sheath. It has been stored in a city vault. It will be packed, sent to Berlin, where it will be presented to the mayor at the ceremony opening the Eleventh Olympiad. More to come later if you guys want it. I love this stuff. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 The most fun is checking used car prices in the classified ads. See what you can get a good used Pierce-Arrow for. Quote
Frank Elder Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Thats the same flag that Jesse Owens raced to history under, that is cool! Quote
Olddaddy Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 We live in a very old house by Florida standards, probably 100 years. When we moved in I was prepping the kitchen for paint and removed the round cover from the old wood stove chimney. I reached in and pulled out a burnt scrap of the local newspaper that had the headline "Japs Attack Pearl Harbor" on it. They must have gotten a gas stove right about that time, I found the woodstove buried in the back yard when we put the pool in. That paper was in there for over 50 years when I found it. Quote
TodFitch Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I wonder what a 1936 era newspaper was doing in a 1949 car? Got to be a story there too. Quote
Don Jordan Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I have a collection of old news papers. Not only were cars cheap but you could get an apartment in San Francisco for $14 a week. Of course minimum wage was about .15 quick story: 100 years ago you could get a 3 piece suit for a $20 gold piece. Today you can get a 3 piece suit for the same $20 gold piece. Quote

DigmyP18 Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 No classifieds but here's something better. One page if this is dedicated to the headlines from July 4th 1776. It seems the birth of our country was a player short for a few days, dig this: 12 STATES VOTE FREEDOM WHILE N.Y AWAITS ORDERS Philadelphia, July 4th 1776---Members of the New York Delegation to the Continental Congress at 10:03 tonight sent a special request for instructions to the colonial convention, which meets in White Plains on July 9th. It reads in part: "We wish, therefore, for your earliest advice and instructions whether we are to consider our Colony bound by the vote of the majority in favor of independence, and vote at large upon such questions as may arise in consequence thereof; or only concur in such measures as may be absolutely necessary for the common safety..." This communication was signed by Delegates George Clinton, Henry Wisner, William Floyd, Francis Lewis, and John Alsop, and was forwarded by a well-mounted messenger. Note: no confirmation of the rumor that the horse was named Plymouth. lol:) Yo New York, what happened? Comments? Quote
