1949dodge
Im ready to rebuild the brake system on my ol 49 dodge. I did you years ago. I think the front has 2 cylinders per side? and one per side in the rear. Does anyone have a good lead on the best route to do this. Like place to get the parts. new cups, master rebuild kit etc. thanks for any info.
TodFitch
I don't have a Dodge parts book, but if it uses the same master and wheel cylinders as Plymouth cars you can get most everything you need at NAPA or on of the other "better" local auto supply stores. http://www.ply33.com/Parts/group5#5-64-
adam_knox
I just did this with my car. Got my brakes from advanced auto parts. Wasn't cheap since I was buying 6 new cylinders. No one (big name chain stores) were selling rebuild kits. The guys at Iola sell them for four bucks a piece. I think Andy B. has them, but if you have any scoring in your old cylinders and time is more important go with the new ones. You can hone out your old ones. I saved mine and am going to rebuild them at my own pace, so maybe in 20 years or so I got a set ready to install. Good luck, be sure to read the tech tips on adjusting the brakes once you get everything together! ~Adam
greg g
For the cost of a rebuild back to stock, or less, you can up grade to disc brakes. Contact member Olddaddy (http//:rustyhope.com) regarding his adapter and parts list. Plus you get self adjusting good stopping brakes, that you can get parts for in the future, But since most pads and rotors last 30K miles, you probably won;t ever need to worry about your front brakes again
desoto1939
I have the Ammco brake gage tool that is needed to set the proper arch of the brakes shoes and for setting up the eccentric pivots on the baking plates. Write to me if you need to borrow the tool. rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
Dodgeb4ya
Just bought new all 6 professional grade wheel cylinders, new master cylinder, 3 new brake hoses- $477.00 shipped. By far the cheapest I could find around here. Napa wanted $348.00 just for the MC! Bob
BobT-47P15
That sounds reasonable, Bob. I got new wheel cylinders and hoses at O'Reilly Auto. But the master has gotten pretty high. I found some in various places from about $160 to over $200. Or, White Post Restorations will re-sleeve it with brass for around $180 or so, as I recall. Re-sleeve is probably the best way to do it once and forever. Bob
