normanpitkin Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 a stupid question, would 8 amp wire be ok to wire some unity foglamps,a unity spotlight,a mopar trunk light AND a six volt siren(very exciting!) in my 48 new yorker?I only ask as i can get some very cheaply!!! I know amps=watts/volts but cannot face buying lots of different types as i am bound to confuse them! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 (edited) I assume you mean 8 guage wire..the AWG wire chart will give you the current capacity at voltage applied, current draw and total run for the circuit..are you running an individual wire per accessory? http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm http://www.windsun.com/Hardware/Wire_Table.htm Edited July 6, 2009 by Tim Adams Quote
greg g Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I think the heaviest wire used stock for accessories was 10 gauge, so 8 should be more than adequate. But I would get an aux fuse box and run a seperate lead from the bat side of the solenoid, I am runing 12 gauge to my fogs with no problems so far. I put an in line fuse. on the switch to lamp side. 20 amp fuses should give you enough power and protection on each circuit. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 The foglamps and spotlight will probably draw the most current. The trunk light is pretty small - should not be any problem. The siren shouldn't be any particular problem either.....I have my siren wired in with probably 12 or 14 gauge......no problem. You don't have it running for any length of time.....unless you're going to use your car for fire or police work. I just give 'em a little short blast or two for amusement - most people laugh or smile. (mine is 6V) Quote

I just give 'em a little short blast or two for amusement - most people laugh or smile. (mine is 6V) A friend gave me a 6v siren that looks like the one you have, but he didn't know how to wire it. It has a short white wire that comes from the motor, then a red wire that runs from the motor to a terminal on a capacitor?. Then a short red wire from that terminal. A long white wire goes to the cap and a long red wire from a second terminal on the cap. The cap is mounted on a small board with the cap on one end and the 2 terminals on the other end with a wire going from the cap to the terminals. I was thinking that 2 of the wires go to a switch and two to power. Just don't know which 2 go where. can you help? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 At least one may likely be a ground. Another for power. Oft times, a red wire = power wire. White maybe ground. Maybe two to the switch....one for each side. Just guessing at the moment. Will have to look later tonight and see if I can tell what i did......all I can say is, it works. Every time someone asks a question like this, I wish I had done a drawing about how I hooked it up. I operate it with a simple push button under the dash. You might try hooking it to your battery and getting a switch to test with. However, in lieu of the switch, just touching the two wires together would likely work. If I can figure how to wire it......anybody can. Quote
greg g Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Could the item you are calling the capacitor be like a timer relay. Giving the siren the ARRWWWERRRR ARRWWWERRRR, instead of just ARRWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Quote
randroid Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 Gents, If it got wired backwards would everything get progressively more quiet until the siren was turned off? -Randy Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 close Randy..the siren when wired backwards sucks in screams from the surrounding area..these could be screams emitted yeas earlier if no one had collected them yet..(these screams are inadudible at this point)...they are in turn stored in the capacitor till you release them for whatever reason you should have by properly reversing the leads to normal operation.. Tim Frank Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 Wasn't that an episode of The Twilight Zone?... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 Went out to the garage while ago to look about wiring for the siren. As the car is kind of up against "stuff" in the front, it was impossible to get to the siren conveniently to trace wires. In looking at the push button under the dash, I found that one wire went to the hot connection on the solenoid...for power. The other wire ran clear up to the siren, attaching to a short red lead on the little noisemaker. It looked like maybe a third wire serving as a ground to the body. That's all I can tell right now. Hope that helps some......maybe next time I back it out I'll remember to look further. I just usully experiment to see what works with the item sitting on the floor or fender. Quote
