Thanks to all that helped with my diagnoses of no compression in 5 & 6 cylinders. Pulled the head off last weekend and I have a blown head gasket between the 2 cylinders. Everything visible looks pretty good. It has 40 over pistons in it which makes me believe the motor has been rebuilt at one time. I could also see the cross hatches from the machine work that was done to the head and top of the block, so that's good. I also found that one of my valves was missing half the keeper. Parts are on order so the flatty should be purring soon.:D

When I cleaned out my oil pan I found about a 1/2 inch of sludge and one keeper.

i did the same thing i found 1/2 a keeper and alot of sludge when i rebuilt the engine but all the keepers were on the valves must have been replaced and never looked for...

Perhaps the extra keeper was your brothers:cool:

HA!! Real good, Don. In this case, if someone was looking for his brother's keeper, he'd have found it in the oil pan. Not the first place you'd go looking, I'm sure. I pulled the oil pan on my 1987 Toyota pickup and found the tensor for the timing chain. In four pieces. It's made of plastic. Apparently, it caught the chain the wrong way and shattered. I have no idea how long it was down there. The truck didn't seem to suffer any.

If you have some extra keepers please send them this way as I have a brother that desperately needs a keeper. He could probably use a crew that would work 24/7.

I believe NAPA has both style head gaskets for the engines with and without internal water pump by-pass. The one for the internal by-pass will work for the engine with the external by-pass but not vice-versa.

well I just got my parts from bernbaum and they were out of keepers. The napa link above didn't go to the part and I couldn't find them on my own. The Checker website listed them, but just for the intakes. Are they both the same? Where should I buy them? thanks, andrew

You are asking for a truck and I only have Plymouth parts books so my truck data are only for the few years in the 1930s when there was a Plymouth truck.

Anyway, assuming your engine is the same as for the P15, I put the information on my web site. You are looking for the "Valve Spring Retainer Lock": http://www.ply33.com/Parts/group9#9-39-17

The should have them at NAPA, the NAPA Online Pro SE area lists the NAPA number as SEP VK63.

Intake and exhaust use the same springs, retainers, locks and valve guides. But the valve guides are installed differently for intake versus exhaust.

In addition to listing the locks, NAPA Online shows the valves (intake and exhaust), guides, springs are available but not the "retainers".

Your questions lead me to one more suggestion: Get a parts book. Chet, who used to post her, has a full 1936-38 Plymouth parts book scanned and available for download. Which makes the price free. I don't have that link at the moment but if you search the archives for the P15-D24 forum on the other side of this web site you should find it.
