Bingster Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 Does anybody have a factory photo of a '47 era Desoto S-11 with skirts or even a Dodge or Plymouth with factory skirts? There seems to be various designs in aftermarket skirts and I'm curious as to what a factory skirt looks like. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Does anybody have a factory photo of a '47 era Desoto S-11 with skirts or even a Dodge or Plymouth with factory skirts? There seems to be various designs in aftermarket skirts and I'm curious as to what a factory skirt looks like. To my knowledge, there were NO "factory" fender skirts for any of the models. They were always aftermarket items. None are shown in my parts manual for the era. One popular brand of skirts was Foxcraft. I'm sure there were some others, but don't know names. Styles were often similar, but had certain differences. My skirts are pretty straight on the bottom edge. Some, like on Norm's coupe and Robin's vert are a little different. [/img] Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Here's another style, like Robin has....... Has the tab on the front & point at the back.....seems to work ok also. Quote
desoto1939 Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 I know for my 39 Desoto they are listed as fender shields and not as fender skirts. Just like the headlight trim rings these are known as headlight doors. so knowing the older terminology which seems strange to us now willhelp with locating the parts in your parts manual. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com Quote
RobertKB Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 I know for my '38 Chrysler there were factory fender skirts (shields) with a stylize Chrysler wing attached. Guess they dropped the idea for the later cars in the 40's and early 50's. Never been a fan of fender skirts so haven't actively looked. Did see one at a swapmeet once but it did not have a mate and it was pricey. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 You should have jumped on that Robert. People only see one side of your car at a time when driving down the street. Quote
RobertKB Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 You should have jumped on that Robert. People only see one side of your car at a time when driving down the street. Good one, Bob. Next time I'll be over it fast and if I see two I can sell one as I won't need it. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 On a similar, but different note, on my midnight blue P15 coupe owned back in the 1970s, I had a pair of skirts. Not a matched pair, however. They were just a bit different from one another, but not much. Evidently no one ever noticed that fact. I finally took them off and sold them separately when I decided to sell the car. Also sold off the painted Chrysler wire wheels. Wish I still had that car now.....but, oh well. It was a good one. (old photo) Quote
glendale Posted June 16, 2009 Author Report Posted June 16, 2009 so my skirts arrived today. and they are chrome! i cleaned one and the other i still have to do.what do you guys think? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 First time I've seen a chrome set of that style. Wonder if they were done by the manufacturer, or by an owner and a chrome shop. Quote
glendale Posted June 17, 2009 Author Report Posted June 17, 2009 not sure i never thought about running chrome skirts. i'll probably paint them just never thought about chrome. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Well.....you can at least try them on first. Then if you don't like chrome, paint em. Quote
