Fernando Mendes Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Where is the correct(original) rear axle vent? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 It is the hollow bolt that attaches the brake line tee block to the axle. It should have a metal cap on top that wiggles. This keeps out the dirt but allows it to breath. Quote
greg g Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Make sue the top does wiggle. If it gets clogged, the heat and pressure can force lube out the seals at the backing plates. Quote

TodFitch Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 YES thats it ( 30-02-20 screw ) I think you meant "3-02-20" at least that is the "Part Type Code" listed in my book and I haven't seen a parts book that goes up to group 30. Looks like there were two part numbers used: 697322 from 1936 through 1939 925525 from 1940 through 1948 (1948 is the end of my parts book set so it that 925525 might be used on newer cars too.) Oddly, that same part is listed under Type Code 5-58-2 but on that page they don't list part 697322 but instead show a star (meaning "not used"). I guess they started using that vent when they did the major axle change in 1935 or 36. For 1933 and 34 they used part 123567, a 7⁄16-20x1 Cad plated steel hexagonal head cap screw, to secure the "Rear axle brake tube tee" to the axle. And the fastener shows up in Group 5 (Service Brakes) rather than in Group 3 (Rear Axle). I do think my car would be more gentle on its rear axle seals if it had a vent. I wonder if the threads on one of those two newer ones would match up to my axle? The tee is a totally different number and the picture shows a different looking fitting so maybe the same fastener would not work. Oh well, I guess I could make a 7/16-20x1 bolt into a vented fastener. Quote
carl b51 Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 Thanks Tod I pushed to many keys. the vent would help your seals as you already know. Thanks again. Carl Quote
