blueskies Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 Yesterday I drove my Plymouth to pick up my boys from soccer practice. I got out of the car, walked over to the field, up along the fence, and then back to the car. Discovered a big hole in my pocket, and the keys dropped out somewhere in the 50 yards that I walked. Looked for them for about an hour, but couldn't find them. The were in my leather key holder with an image of the plymouth stamped on the leather, given to me by a forum member, too. Someone must have picked them up before I realized they were missing. Luckily, I had the extra set I had made for my trip to Tulsa in the car, so I was able to drive home. Problem is, when I had the keys made, the lock shop didn't have a blank for the trunk key so I didn't get a spare for that one. And the trunk is locked... damn. Any thoughts on how I can get it open? Pete Quote
1955 plymouth Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 I will look at mine tonight, I will see how the latch works and see if there would be an easy way to get in or pop the trunk from the backside, I could post some pics if needed also. No fun. Perhaps you could have one of the kids crawl in with a flashlight and pop it from the inside once you see how it works? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 Pete there are I believe 3 screws holding the latch to the lid. Might have to pull the back seat and crawl in. I wonder if thats possible with the X brace behind the seat. Quote
Scott1953 Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 Have to agree with Young Ed. Through the backseat seems the easiest and least destructive. Also, it might be worth while to print up some flyers saying that you lost a set of keys, describe them as you did here and post them around the soccer field. Most people that pick up something like that only do so because they want to find the rightful owner (I think). It might also help to call the local police station if you haven't already to see if someone has turned them in. Scott Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 Darn, Pete. That's the pits. Maybe someone found them and will turn them in. Here's a link to a picture of the inside of the latch on a P15. May be similar to yours......http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/BobT3/Petey%20Plymouth%201/Body%20-%20Trim/100_0726.jpg Quote
blueskies Posted May 20, 2009 Author Report Posted May 20, 2009 I'll have to pull the seat and see if one of us can squeeze through into the trunk. If so, there are two bolts that hold the handle assembly on the trunk lid. If I can get it off from the inside, I can take it to the lock shop and see if they can make a key... More pissed at losing the leather key holder than the keys though. Pete Quote
blueskies Posted May 20, 2009 Author Report Posted May 20, 2009 Went through some pictures to see what's in there... I bet one of my kids can fit through the x brace and get into the trunk... I don't have the cardboard piece in there yet that seperates the back of the seat from the trunk so it should be wide open with the seat out. Pete Quote

dezeldoc Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 Pete, call a locksmith they can pick it and make a key after they get it open. Quote
blueskies Posted May 20, 2009 Author Report Posted May 20, 2009 Keys found! I went into the school this afternoon to see if by chance one of the kids found them today a recess, and they were in the office... All is well- Pete Quote
Young Ed Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 Now with this narrowly averted crisis fresh in your mind you need to get a spare trunk key made! Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 Pete; You already lost the BIG RACE. Is there a surprise bottle of juice in your locked trunk? Quote
blueskies Posted May 20, 2009 Author Report Posted May 20, 2009 Now with this narrowly averted crisis fresh in your mind you need to get a spare trunk key made! I'm gonna have to find the key blank first, the one and only local lock shop doesn't have one... Which is why I didn't have the trunk on my spare key ring to start with. ...Is there a surprise bottle of juice in your locked trunk? Not unless you slipped some of your Tennessee 'Shine in there when I wasn't looking... Speaking of the BIG RACE, when are you gonna load up that trunk of yours and run to Speed Week? Pete Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 I think they settle for an actual video of Norm's car leaving the driveway... Quote

steveplym Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 Not sure Ed. I went to the hardware store and they could not help me. I had to buy my blanks off of epay and then the store could cut them, that's it. Probably need to find an old time locksmith or mom and pop hardware store. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 I had my old truck and car keys duplicated at my store. I wonder if I took the keys for my p23 there if the trunk one is the same blank as a 50. Handles are the same.... Quote
old woolie Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 There was a thread here awhile back that said 60's and 70's blanks could be used for these locks. Worth a try. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 Norm..the cylinder definesthe key to be used..the tumblers only need match the cut on the keys..he or you may have had an existing key for that cylinder already cut and he just arranged the five tumblers.. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 Norm..you have now stated two distinctly different scenarios.. Quote
